Why is Strava so popular?
What makes it better than Garmin Connect, or all the myriad of other sports tracking sites?
Who uses what as their main tracking tool and why?

I think Strava looks at the roads you travelled and measures that distance, Garmin just records the data the sensors for GPS delivers. My Garmin occasionally auto pauses and resumes loosing up to a couple of km on a ride on a bad day.

Here's a good difference. Garmin Connect offers average moving speed and average speed so you don't need to pause your computer to get an indication of how fast you rode either side of coffee stops (and traffic lights).

pretty sure the average speed that Strava lists for a ride is the moving average as well.
