Hi

I realise asking the question 'should I get another bike' on this forum is like asking a hairdresser if I need a haircut - of course I do!

I've been lusting after this for sometime.

The full details are here: viventebikes

Is this a massive overkill?  My wants/needs are as follows:

  • I commute 15 km each way Monday-Friday.
  • I need something comfortable.
  • I need mudguards.
  • I need to carry panniers
  • I need a kickstand
  • I want disc brakes - this only has a front disc brake - what do people think?
  • I want puncture resistant tires.

This bike has a hub generator for the lights which is a real bonus too.

The only real stumbling block is my Minister for Finance.

Any thoughts?  Alternatives?

I think you are being a bit blinkered. Every bike serves a purpose. For what Hozozco wants it for, it would totally serve his purpose and be really functional.

I am much more in admiration of cyclists who are car-less, ride for everyday transport and also tour hundreds of KMs carrying all their stuff than taking out the KOM on a local pimple.

My steel tourer is 30 years old and and, like the wrinkles on a senior's face, has many more stories to tell of 1000s of kms around the world (not with me unfortunately). It is much more interesting that a 2 yr old carbon fibre cookie cutter bike.

Go for it!

Yes agree with you Martin.....

+1 for what Gus said (except for the bit about the steel tourer)

I saw it last week in Bio-Mechanics Cycles Repairs (Wright St CBD). The honker is outstanding. The best bling on a bike I've ever seen! (But I think Lia and Pete are just politely telling customers "no, give it a honk, we're not sick of it or anything"...)

I saw this Fiji touring bike in Glenelg cycles the other day for about half the cost of the Vivente, but it has bar end shifters and you would have to put mud guards on it, $999 on sale.

Alternative bike....maybe a fixie would suit your needs and be a lot cheaper and much less maintainence

I have been commuting on Fairdale Parser Express for about 6 months.  Single speed (not fixie).  Nice ride and stands up to ill treatment.  I have added panniers, mud guards and lights.  I didn't add a horn.

Hi

Thanks for the replies so far.

Martin/Frank I'm not sure a power meter meets my listed needs/wants, but thanks for the suggestion.

Gus - BMCR is my favourite bike shop and was very excited when their regular newsletter said they had these bikes. I didn't know if they had one in stock - I should drop in and have a look/ride.

Trevor - Do you mean Fuji touring bike? Assuming you do, I've seen the specs and it looks quite reasonable. It doesn't have disc brakes and I that is something I'd really like. It doesn't have lights, which is not a deal breaker, but would be nice.

Other bikes I've considered are the Focus Wasgo TR 2.0 2012 (2013 lost the disc brakes), Kona Sutra and Jamis Bosanova (not sure who sells this in Adelaide).

Cheers

Simon

Hi Frank

I know.  My wife does this - plays a straight bat to funny comments like yours.  Married 13 years and I still have difficulty knowing if she's serious or not.

and of course the internet still doesn't have a sarcasm or joking font yet!

This calls for a race! ... carrying 5kgs of shopping and a kid.
