Beating the heat.

With the temperature  forecast  to be well in the 40’s for Saturday, the ride was cancelled and moved to the Friday night. This is a great way of still getting a ride in, but away from the heat.

So for ride we had just on 30 riders turn out, and it had a very festive mood as for many riding at night is a bit of a novelty, plus it was great to get out for a ride anyway.

This time of the year often sees a flurry of new bikes and tonight we saw some new ones out.

Left to right. Deb, Kate, Wendy, Bec, Paula and Jane. Deb, Wendy, Bec and Paula,  were sporting new bikes. In particular Paula’s bike was out for its second run, with  Paula just returning from a holiday in North America, experiencing going from around  minus  20° C to now around 40°C. Now that’s a big turnaround! It was also good to see Jane out again, as it has been a while.

At the safety briefing everyone was reminded about lights, in particular to point them more down if possible, so as to not confuse drivers on the NEXY. Also, that the first part of the ride was  into a setting sun so to be very conscious about not half wheeling those in front.

It was still pretty warm when we finally headed off and for the first ten minutes everyone was very cautious, which was great to see. As the sun started to set the temperature lost its earlier ‘bite’ and the twilight session set in, it was just fantastic.

Here are a few riders getting close to the end of the SOB.

Towards the end of the SOB and the last of the sun.

When we all reached the end of the SOB the sun had finally set and it was still quite warm, but very pleasant once you were moving.

Here are some of the group at the end, enjoying the evening

The return trip was now in the dark, with smaller  groups forming up. In particular those with really good night lights took the lead allowing others to settle in behind. Great to see.

In the end we all got back safely from a great ride at a bit past 10pm. The only problem we had was one flat as we headed out, that was fixed pretty quickly.

Thanks to Kate who took on the role of TEC, great job and thanks for the jelly snakes.

We also had three new riders out tonight.

Scott has just taken up cycling and this was essentially his first group ride. He rode very well.

Andrew rides a far bit and had a good ride settling into the rhythm of the group.

Wendy is Richard L. partner and is relatively new to riding. She was well supported by many of the other ladies in particular Linda. She enjoyed the experience and will be out again.

Finally, it was great to see the number of ladies steadily increasing; tonight over a third were ladies, being very supportive of each other all of the time.

So another great ride for the Wheelers, and next weekend’s weather is looking a lot more conducive to riding.

Until next week, stay cool and safe
