Police are at the scene of a hit-run crash at Bridgewater involving a car and a cyclist.
About 5.35pm today (Sunday 13-Jan-2019) police and emergency services were called to Mount Barker Rd after reports that a car and cyclist had collided, with the male rider taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The car, which is believed to be a white dual-cab ute (possibly an older model Toyota Hilux) with a silver aluminium tray, stopped further down Mount Barker Rd and the male driver exited the vehicle, before getting back in and driving away.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged between 50-65 years old, heavy build, and was wearing a dark grey shirt and shorts.
The ute is missing its left side mirror, which was knocked off in the collision.
Major Crash investigators are at the scene, and there are road restrictions on Mount Barker Rd between Aldgate and Bridgewater.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has dashcam footage from the area around this time is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au

I hope the cyclist fully recovers from his injuries, and the driver is identified.

this is the car pic from Crimestoppers facebook page.

the Ute lost the left mirror in the accident which unfortunately means that tray would have hit the cyclist at full force. Those extended trays (beyond the body of the car) are so dangerous, I wish the cyclist a speedy recovery.

A fairly common vehicle. However, I hope enough people using dash cams so that the rego plate, vehicle and driver identified.

Basically the same info as the SAPOL website. ABC News links seems to work for longer period.

Man arrested over alleged cyclist hit-and-run in Adelaide Hills

They say the 58-year-old Klemzig man collided with the male cyclist on Mount Barker Road on Sunday after..., leaving him badly injured.

Police said the driver noticed the crash, which knocked off his left side-view mirror, and exited the vehicle, but then got back in and drove off.

The alleged offender was charged with aggravated causing serious harm by dangerous driving, leaving the scene of a serious crash, driving with a suspended licence and aggravated driving without due care.

The driver has been arrested. ABC News Link.

Suspended licence. Throw the book at him.

The cyclist is in a stable condition at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

I wonder how many serious crashes like this involve someone driving with a suspended or cancelled license ? It seems like I keep hearing that phrase.  We have to start having some serious penalties for people for doing this. Otherwise removing the licence becomes a meaningless penalty.

If someone drives without a current licence, impound the vehicle?

Registration and licensing statistics as at 31-Dec-2018

This does not identify how many currently have a suspended licence, or drive while suspended or without bothering to obtain a licence.
It does indicate that many negligent drivers have been caught out, but not the negligent drivers who hold a current drivers licence.
