So lately I've started commuting from my house in Salisbury to the Adelaide CBD. I usually ride to town by taking Salisbury Highway, onto Port Wakefield Rd, and then onto Main North Road. There's even a neat little bike lane to make it safe to go from Salisbury Highway onto Port Wakefield road. However, on the way back, trying to get from Port Wakefield Road onto Salisbury Highway, I find myself having to cross 3 lanes of 80km/h traffic. Tried it today and got a lot of motorists very angry, nevermind the danger. Am I missing an obvious route here? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Try from Pt Wakefield Rd right into Montague Rd (ped crossing available), then left into Cross Keys Rd.  Continue along the line of Cross Keys Rd along minor roads and paths through Mawson Lakes, over Dry creek, then towards the ML interchange, and then along the path between the railway and the airport.  This will bring you to Kings Road.

I tend to take Prospect Road through to and across Grand Junction, then dogleg across Cavan Road onto Churchill Road North via the Tip Top Bakery. I then cut through Mawson Lakes and go up the side of Parafield airport... depends what part of Salisbury you live in. You can see it here:

Personally I think you're crackers going home that way, there are many other routes to get you home with a much lower risk of dying. However if you insist that's the best way, pull off to the left, activate the pedestrian lights before the Sals highway bridge, then zip through the right turn lane. There's a path right through the median strip to the next pedestrian crossing but its usually full of tyre eating fragments, so beware.

I have not commuted from Salisbury but would,

From town  Churchill road, Cross keys road, sneak though Mawson Lakes and you should find yourself at the 60Km/hour part of Salisbury highway

work?

There is a short cut at the end of cross keys road

Alternatively try Google maps

I used to regularly ride from Salisbury and number of years ago became frustrated enough to put up a web site documenting the hazards including disappearing bike lanes.  It is a bit out of date now, but if you check out http://users.adam.com.au/bowler/bike/deathtrap.html I am sure some of it would be familiar to you.  Fortunately there is now a bike lane most of the way along Main North Rd from the Levels to Grand Junction Rd, which I found made that route not too bad compared with dicing with the semi trailers on Pt Wakefield Rd.

I'm a regular commuter along the same route, albeit that I actually turn off Pt Wakefield Rd soon after getting onto it (go under the railway bridge to get to work). Coming home I face the same dilemma, getting across into the turning lanes onto Salisbury Highway. I come out onto Pt Wakefield Road from Vater Way (just north of the railway bridge before the lights) and normally have to wait in the slip lane for traffic to thin out before crossing but what actually helps me is the lights for traffic heading north. Normally when these go red, traffic banks back a fair bit and most drivers normally allow me to get across to the turning lanes as they are slowing down/stopping. Traffic is quite busy at 2:30ish and not so bad at 10:30pm when I'm on arvo's.

As for the neat little bike lane to make it safe to go from Salisbury Highway onto Port Wakefield road - you must be pulling my leg. Continiously full of debris which makes it a puncture magnet, not to mention that it floods in heavy rain and takes days to dry out - I use the traffic lane, timing my run when there is no other traffic coming up behind me.

@John, I avoid the cnr where possible, take the scenic route through mawson lakes, from salis hwy onto elder smith blvd, main st to mawson lakes blvd, all the way through to montague road and back down to MNR. Adds about 5 k to the trip, but way less dangerous.

I take Bridge road/Briens road usually. The cars only do 60 and the lanes are wide enough for most of the way even if there aren't bike lanes for much of it.

Thanks so much for the help guys. Reckon the Mawson Lakes routes might be a goer, I don't think I'll mind the extra distance if it means I make it home without getting hurt.

Interesting that the ride the city route takes you through Gilles Plains. I remember there to be a laneway to cycleroute that ran behind the Velodrome.
