Audio Tactile Line Marking (ATLM) Dangerous on Main South Road

ATLM has been installed by Department of Transport, Planning & Infrastructure (DPTI) along the edges of the Main South Rd over Sellicks Hill. ATLMs are raised thermoplastic bars around 150mm long laid just outside the edge of lane line(fog line) exactly where a cyclist rides. The bars shake a bike considerably when you ride over them, quite sufficiently to cause possible loss of control if done at speed, especially when wet. Riding over them is definitely to be avoided. In some areas there is a rideable shoulder to the left of the ATLMs but in other places the shoulder is only 150mm or less. To ride the road there are many places where you need to ride within the marked traffic lane & cross the ATLMs to get back to the shoulder. DPTI's own standards state "Minimum criteria for edge line ATLM: Sealed shoulder shall be no less than 0.5m wide" See DTPI Pavement Marking Manual page C78. I feel that even this width of shoulder would be inadequate. Around 0.8m wide outside the ATLMs of clean smooth pavement should be the minimum. The ATLMs would then even provide cyclists some protection to ride on the shoulder.
    The Main South Road is designated a cycling corridor, Sellicks Hill is the only way to cycle south from the Aldinga, Maslins, Moana region unless you go inland to Willunga Hill. The BikeSA Coast to Coast goes over Sellicks Hill.  DTPI have successfully made Fleurieu cycling more dangerous, continuing what seems like a deliberate policy of discouraging road cycling by Local & State Government. No wonder riders are cycling less.

We often cycle that way and its horrendous with the ATLMs

On BikeSA Grand Slam 3 from Williamstown we rode by a stretch of ATLMs on the Kersbrook Rd, from the roundabout at the One Tree Hill Rd intersection, on the left side as you headed up towards Kersbrook and stopping where the guardrail commenced. They appeared possibly hand made using spayseal techniques, probably using a barred template and then coated with a coarse aggregate, possibly experimental. Result was pretty well as discussed, another dangerous cycle hazard. Kersbrook Rd there is a DPTI road and suggest they were evaluating another method of creating ATLMs. Apologies for not posting this sooner.

I rode up Sellick’s Hill yesterday and I think that they have done a good job. They have used hot mix to add what is essentially a bike lane (but not marked as such) on the outside of the ATLM. It has made the ascent much safer and more pleasant. It finishes where the road narrows to one lane, but the existing road is ok after that. At least until the Resevoir road junction.

Did like what I heard from Heatherin in BISA newsletter, re trip interstate where ATLMs were being used along the road center only. Its probably more important for a car not to cross to the opposing side of the road than run off the outside. In the center there was also the advantage that cyclista would know when a car was doing a safe pass as the cars outside wheels would run along the ATLMs :-) 

Took a ride up Sellicks Hill Friday 8/3. I was quite impressed with the shoulder they have built outside the ATLMs going up, mainly along the section with passing lane.   Very nice, thanks BISA. 

I was unimpressed by gravel particularly on the way down, extremely dangerous if you hit it at speed.  Feel urgent attention is required to clean it up and then it needs to be part of a regular sweep program, perhaps monthly initially.
