This video captures quite a few of the issues I see that are preventing a true bike culture developing in Australia.

It is a curious thing. Seeing so many roadies out on the roads every day is great but I can't help thinking that the image these lycra clad go-further, go-faster types portray to someone considering cycling as a means of transport is that you have to be super fit to be a cyclist and you need to ride a bike that costs more than some cars. The truth is you just have to get on a bike and start pedalling and you will be surprised how far and how fast you can travel. Do it regularly and you'll be even more surprised.

These days I'm wrapped to see a guy or girl wearing shorts and a t-shirt on an average bike riding around the hills. I wish I had the answer as to how to demonstrate a commuting culture that would make potential cyclists take notice. Anyone got any ideas outside of the usual "make cycling fun" and events like Ride To Work Day? How do we make commuting cool?

Actually this is interesting on a few levels. It was made by 'veteren' film maker Mike Rubbo who has a long career in Australia making fiction and non fiction films. It's the second time in a couple of days I've seen his name in relation to cycling. He is a regualr contributor to forums and discussions (like copenhagezine.com).

Mike Rubbo was also the creator of the ABC TV series Race Around The World.

This film also touches on another subject raised in Ianto Ware's 21 Nights In July book and that is the blurring of the idea between racing bling, lycra roadies etc promoted by magazines and the idea of just cycling for transport.
