Paul, thanks for replying. I have not travelled with a bike before on plane or train, so still learning and trying to be prepared. I decided on a bike bag rather than a cardboard box because after the Brisbane cycling conferences, I will be cycle touring and catching trains. Previously boxes unavailable at these stations. Not that it exempts using a box when flying out of Adelaide. I have purchased folding pedals to reduce one chore at the airport or train station. Have a quick release seat. Yet to learn if I can pack in rear panniers only or need to remove front rack quickly. Have bought folding allen keys in case. Indications that with my bike will need to remove front wheel and undo the head stem. Hope to get to the bike coop this Saturday to test and time packing my bike into the bag. Would like a knowledgeable cyclist around to offer me advice. After this practice, I will be better informed. For example, if it takes me too long to pack a bike, then do it the night before my departure, and hire a taxi van to the airport. I will get back to you on your kind offer of getting to work a little early, to provide me with packing cardboard. Note that you said a little early, not a lot early, so need to time myself. I appreciate how Adelaide Cyclists help other members. Angus has helped to create a great community. Thanks Heather.
Hope you see and reply to this. You posted that you work at the airport. On Thursday 15-Sep I am flying out of Adelaide at 9.10am so my packed bike must be checked in by 7.10am. First time I will have taken a bike on a plane and Chris Hutchinson has kindly lent me her BOD bag. This bag can be folded into a small size because it has little padding. Chris told me to tape bubble wrap around the jockey wheel and chain, and pack pieces of cardboard around the bike (perhaps wheels and spokes). I am considering cycling to the airport, rather than catch a taxi van. Do you know of anywhere at the airport that I could RELIABLY source cardboard pieces about 6.30am?
