Today I went out for lunch and ended up in ER

My rescheduled lunch with Andrew Hamilton of the "that's not a calve injury, that's DVT! didn't really go to plan today.

A short ride into Rundle St from work. I was ahead of time I just took a nice cruise along the river and even stopped to take a call from Ashleigh Moore. Parked the bike, showed Andrew the Icebreaker winter riding stuff in Paddy Pallin, walked down to a cafe, sat down. Andrew recounted his horrifying story of his DVT two weeks before on the morning we were supposed to meet up.

Then "sorry mate, I don't feel so well" and promptly keeled over blacking out for 30 seconds or so and coming round to find an off duty doctor and two nurses looking after me (the benefits of eating near the RAH).

I came around slowly and sat back up. The ambulance was called and after some obseravtions was taken to the RAH for an afternoon being hooked up to machines.

The reason? Not really sure. Probably was a low blood pressure event topped off with dehydration. I'd ridden my son to school the work and forgotten my bidon. Did a morning's work and then into town. It was a hot day and I probably didn't take in I needed more fluids.

"drink before you're thirsty, eat before you're hungry" to quote Durian Rider and others. I didn't get to eat lunch and got put on a drip instead! I did get to learn my resting heart rate though.

So I feel fine now, except for that weird feeling you get from sitting about an ER all afternoon after having a turn. This also comes after a fall at training on Tuesday when my bike dislodged from the trainer and I fell hard on my side. I've been feeling worse each day since. Possibly related but more so I needed to take a break.

Thanks to the two nurses on their day off (and hung over) for helping, the ambos who are always great - one, John, was a very keen cyclist (B grade racer on a Trek Madone). He said the colour was coming back to my face talking about cycling! Also the RAH people were great, my wife who had to come and get me, Andrew-- sorry mate, we'll reschedule again.

... and I had a leave pass this evening to go for a ride too (sorry Simon, but I did see you heading off). Now to go an peel off all the ECG tags... ouchies!

Angus

I'm concerned to hear about your turn. I can't imagine it was connected to your fall off that trainer last Tuesday arvo. Anyway, I bet you that put the wind up young Matthew!! Hope to see you back at  cycle training soon. Tony

Angus,

I've had three similar episodes (all in restaurants), the last (15 months ago) landed me in hospital for 8 days whilst they did every test possible.  Best diagnosis for me was Migrane. Immediately follow this I changed my pillow to one of those contour one's and I haven't had a bad neck ache/head ache since.  Also, I don't go anywhere without Asprin - first sign of a headache /faint feeling, down with a couple of Asprin to get on top of it early.

hope it wasn't my call!!  Seriously, hope all is now well and only due to lack of sugar and hydration at the time.

Scott, did the testing include a Glucose Intolerance Test of blood sampling over 5 hours? Some doctors request 3 hour testing that will show diabetes, but need 5 hour testing to show pre-diabetes. Eating food can change insulin levels and precipitate symptoms.
