There and back again, hot weather cycling and a fun commute..

Rode my Specialized P1 AM to work today and what an excellent ride it was!

I don’t often to get to ride a responsive and light bike, mostly riding (through practical necessity) my Xtracycle. While I love this bike, the ride and the handling, the Xtracycle is quite heavy, is built to haul things over long distances, and it is not particularly fast.

The P1 AM on the other hand, is fast and comfortable over long distances while still offering a really fun and responsive ride. On the way to work I had a heap of fun hammering away on it, taking every little jump and bump that I could. Did a short detour through the BMX skills park on the corner of Greenhill and Unley Road before heading off to Edwardstown where I work.

After work I headed up to a friends place up in Pasadena before a really good ‘long way home’ ride. I tried to keep to as much ‘off-road’ and side streets that I could. Went up Springbank Road before dropping off to the left to follow the rail corridor. Ended up down in Unley where I rode up the Culvert before going through Eastwood, through Victoria Park, the east parklands then a series of back lanes and parks before heading back up through Maylands, St Morris, up past ‘The Gums’ and home again.

Did about 45kms today, most of that in the hottest part of the day. Took it relatively easy, still having a few surreal heat moments. Carried two water bottles with me with wet socks over them to keep the contents cool, a trick I learn from Bicycle Fish.

Thanks to Angus for showing me the Nokia Sports Tracker application the other night. I downloaded it and have been using it this week on my 6110 Nav and it works a treat. Images here are from the export to Goggle Earth, really good for replaying the trip to yourself later on!

Today’s ride has left me feeling really good. I rode through a part of the inner south of Adelaide I have never been through before, found a few new places to ride through the city and best of all, mixed it up on a really fun bicycle.

Jeremy, I am sure I am not the first to say you are 'hardcore' or you've taken a lot of inspiration from 21 Nights in July.

I thought those maps looked familiar. It is good but I've found my GPS lock a bit flakey lately. I reckon the US are getting nervy and turning a few off now and again to throw us all off.

Now can you invent a handlebar mount?

Well, don't really consider myself 'hardcore' by any means, just enjoy the ride regardless of the weather. The Magill to Edwardstown is my everyday commute, just threw a few more kilometres and a different route home for a bit of variety!

On the GPS front, I noticed that the maps don't always track my route exactly against Google Earth, but are so close that I can easily re-trace the route taken. The inaccuracy is probably due to the fact that my phone is in my pocket and there is tree cover over part of the route (I don't use the AGPS of cell phone tower triangulation as that is an extra data charge I don't need!)

I've tried tracking down a handlebar mount for my E75, but no luck! Garmin do one, but designed for the 705 unfortunately. The other thing I have issues with sometimes though is time taken vs time elapsed! GPS goes into autopause, so when I have been out on all day rides, I can end up with half hour difference between bike and gps! (think I need to review my autopause settings!) Otherwise once it has picked up satellites, its awesome system!
