This bike came with toe clip pedals, and this type I do not like. Everyone is entitled to opinions and mine is that properly adjusted, falling off with these means twisted or broken ankles, so they are coming off. They will get cleaned up as part of the restoration, but I don't think i'll use them at this stage. Pedal wrench was thankfully all I needed, someone remembered to grease the pedal shaft threads before they were installed. Remember the left and right pedals have different threads, so if it won't loosen. try the other way.

Rob, your foot would only be stuck if you used shoes designed for them, with the lump on the bottom, wouldn't they?

Not with the kinky leather cage on the top holding the shoe in. I've previously used Shimano SPD mountain bike pedals (very good for commuting) but now I run look keo pedals in various models.
