Adelaide Cyclists

Hi all,

I hope if you rode the Coast to Coast today you had a great time.

Cancer Voices SACongratulations to Cancer Voices SA Cycling Team who entered the ride with a team of 53 members and were awarded a special community grant of $5000 which is excellent news and will help in their fight. Cancer Voices SA now have a group of their own on Adelaide Cyclists to share stories, photos, tips and help promote their work. CVSA, promoted by Ashleigh Moore welcome any cyclist to join their group and team. Read more about what they can offer members in the group or on their site.

And while on the Coast to Coast - member Nick Hortovanyi raised the most sponsorship money to go to help underprivileged kids via The Smith Family. The Smith Family's GM told me this morning in Stirling he was more than happy with the money being raised, especially by Nick, and also noted the contribution of Ride Like Crazy and Mark Matthew.

This week sees the opening of the Mike Turtur Bikeway Overpass over South Rd. Good friends of this community, The Bicycle Institute of SA (BISA), campaigned for this piece of infrastructure and are extending their invite from the Minister to all cyclists to be a part of the first peleton (led by Minister Conlon). The event kicks off at 8.15am this Friday (19 March). There will be a vegetarian friendly BBQ. It'd be great to see a huge turnout of cyclists to send a message that more cycling infrastructure is needed (especially for the increasing numbers of commuting cyclists Adelaide is forecast to see over the next few years. What should be next?

BISA will be giving away their new range of stickers at the opening but if you can't be there they have given Adelaide Cyclists a stack to giveaway to members. The first 50 members to send an email to adelaidecyclists@gmail.com with their postal address* will receive a set of 6 stickers to display on their bikes, cars or share with others.

If you are looking for something else fun to do with bikes this week look no further than the 'Rundle Mall Rampage', organised by Amanda Steele. It's on Wednesday 17 during the morning peak. It's a race of sorts - bike vs bus vs car. Travel into the city by a means of transport (public transport and car users are encouraged as comparison) meeting at Mall's Balls. The northern starting point is Regency Plaza: starting at 7:30 from the bus stop on Regency Road 17A. If you can't be there record some observations (on a mobile phone etc) along your regular commute and contribute them after. More details on the event page or send Amanda a message.

Thanks to everyone who came for our 'Pursuit of Pancakes' ride last weekend. It was great to meet some new faces. Some recent site highlights include - 'Life Post Cars'; a lovely little short film 'Commuter Dreams'; 'Injured cyclist awarded damages when path did not meet Ausroads'; 'Cycling etiquette'; Jeff Lock's touring bike photo set and our second podcast, the interview with Adelaide writer Ianto Ware about his book '21 Nights In July' is still available to listen to.

... oh and we are now more than 300 members strong. Welcome to all the new members and we'd love to see some more so invite your friends.

All the best for the month.

Cheers
Angus
