Hi,
The Stuart O Grady bikeway is a fabulous addition to our bicycle network, and I use it almost every day. There is one very dangerous spot though. At the very Southern end of the track there is about a 150m of road (Mill Road South) which is completely covered in very loose gravel, and I have seen quite a few people skid and fall off their bikes as they hit this loose section.
Would it be possible to have this section of road made safer ? Perhaps re-tarmaced or at very least have a road sweeper remove the dangerous gravel from the road ?
Looking forward to hearing your response,
Regards,
Pete Roberts
Note: I have carbon copied this letter to the excellent web site www.adelaidecyclists.com
Comment by Keith Davies on March 1, 2012 at 6:46 Good point Pete. Wouldn't hold your breath for a suitable response.
Comment by Don (Who's lost?) Nairn on March 1, 2012 at 13:46 I am from the southern suburbs so I don't know "mill road south"
I would,d think that if you expect someone to be able to work out where the evil nasty gravel is from this letter they may need some form of telepathic superpower.
Some sort of street numbers would make it a lot easier for the street sweeper to work out where the hazard is
If you zoom in close enough Google maps has street numbers on it.
Comment by Matt Brennan on March 1, 2012 at 17:45 If that is a smaller road it may be council rather than state government.
Might be worth giving them a ring to check.
Comment by Pete Roberts on March 1, 2012 at 19:58 Good comment Don, however the road is only short ( about 100 m long ) and the entire road is covered in that evil nasty gravel.
@ Matt, you may be right. I was quite surprised that at the end of such a good track is this death trap. It just does not make sense that this section was not upgraded when the path was laid...
If you want to see it online you need to use nearmap.com as both Google and Bing maps imagery is too old. Search for "Taylors Road, Waterloo Corner, South Australia" in any of them and then follow it (to the left) to Port Wakefield Road then you need to look at the road to the south that actually intercepts Port Wakefield Road (Lot 28 according to Google). There is a short stub of a road without a name but with a turning circle running parallel to Port Wakefield. That is the evil road that Pete is talking about. It seems to be there to provide access to a house (lot 24) that is now cut off from Port Wakefield Road but the SOB was built to connect to it.
Pete looking back in time via nearmap it looks like that road was created when the intersection of Port Wakefield onto the Northern Expressway was created. Have a look at 1 Dec 2009 and then 19 Nov 2010 when the SOB was connected to it.
Comment by heather on March 1, 2012 at 22:27 You can readily contact Traffic Hazards by email DPTI.EnquiriesAdministrator@sa.gov.au or phone 1800 018 313 (24-hr). DPTI prefer a phone call if an urgent hazard (includes broken glass in bicycle lanes). Not sure if Transport within DPTI is the appropriate authority -- phone or add to the email to let you know if another authority responsible for maintenance. I am knowledgeable about reporting hazards -- in 2011 a total of 454 different hazard types.
Comment by Pete Roberts on March 2, 2012 at 4:15 @ Heather,
Would you be interested in passing on the info here to the correct department Please :)
Comment by heather on March 2, 2012 at 15:02 Pete, best if you do the contacting in case they ask more questions. Tell me the council area so I can provide an email address. Then you email to obviously both council and transport, asking for the route to be improved, but also to let you know which authority is responsible for the maintenance. Explain that it is hazardous for cyclists. Can you add something about used frequently by Gawler Wheelers, the number of members, and how the group patronises local eating places. Send me the draft for vetting. I will give you the Adelaide BUG email address so you can add "CC: Adelaide BUG (Bicycle User Group)". Transport know me by now, but not the outer councils.
It's in Ward 1 of Playford Council
Comment by Keith Davies on March 2, 2012 at 16:16 Pete the number Heather has given you is the one she gave me regarding the Mcintyre Rd problem. The guy who answered was very receptive and coperative, while that incedent wasn't his dept he gave me the name and number of the person to contact. Long way around but good end result.
