If you were in local or state government what would you do to make Adelaide better?

An interesting ‘crowd sourcing’ website was set up called Co-create London that asks the simple question ‘What Would You Do To Make London A Better Place?‘. Another interesting blog that rounds up good ideas
from around the world is ‘Cool Town Studios

What would you do to maintain Adelaide as Australia’s most liveable city? Perhaps you’ve lived or traveled somewhere else and saw something you wished we had here.

Not just fix the buses or build more cycle paths – really big and innovative ideas. Adelaide Cyclists is read by a lot of people – perhaps policy makers, so
I’ve created a new group Ideas for
Adelaide
to let everyone have their say.

This idea came from a coverversation between Luke Hallam and Travis G on Twitter.. so credit to them.

Adelaide needs to move beyond being a city that 'thinks' about the type of place that it wants to be and become a city of 'doing' - not afraid to experiment with new ideas, urban forms and social policy. The dominance of cars for the majority or most inter-urban transport trips will have to change - it is just a question of whether this happens through choice bought about through positive behavioral change, or as a result of external pressures (eg: rising fuel costs and no viable alternatives). As this happens we will need to consider different urban forms, housing diversity and affordability, functional open space provision, water sensitive urban design (to capture storm water), and public transport integrated and adopted through-out the metro area. The idea that TOD (Transit Oriented Developments) will solve all of these issues is attractive from a policy position, but will need careful consideration and implementation - not to mention wide scale private sector development and investment. It is up to Government to make this attractive and have the correct incentives to drive development intensity. The City of Adelaide (the square mile) has so much under utilized land - it is ripe for some showcase developments that will bring population, intensity, diversity and business into the City. The time is now!
