This song popped into my head this morning right after a man on a push bike traveling the other way totally ignored me when I said "G'day" as we passed.

Why is it that so many people have lost the old ways? Am I just nostalgic for a time that is now long gone: replaced by the cold hard reality of Post-Modernity?

Do you say "G'day" as you pass other cyclists? How do you feel if you are ignored in your act of cordiality?

actually to Patrick's comments...yes your right about the snobbery on what bike you ride...
i found that when i ride my giant commuter....they don't wanna know you....
but as soon as the road bike is out you get the nods....weird but true

I can't help it, I am cursed with the same affliction Jim is, we just have to say hi to people, and share the sheer joy we feel riding whatever bike it is we grab from the shed that day. But I don't just stop at saying hello to our fellow cyclists, I have also been busted on numerous occasions talking to the animals as I ride past. I had a lovely conversation with a goat on Sunday morning. No, Carla was standing on the opposite side of the road.

You are right tho, there is a certain amount of bike snobbery, based on your ride of choice for the day, but beyond that, there can even be a certain amount of kit snobbery! Crazy stuff really. We're all just cyclists out doing what we enjoy!

For the last 7 weeks I've been commuting down the linear park to Lockleys from the Paradise Bus Interchange. I used to nod at all the cyclists going the other way but I was either ignored or got blank looks from 4 out of 5 people.
I'm now back to commuting to Bedford Park and that's mainly on streets with a similar response rate. But this morning I was pleasantly surprised when most people responded.

Yes Wombat love the Gday Strategy - the more we do it the better & friendlier Adelaide cycling will become? and if not at least I get good karma from making the effort of utttering such a simple word...maybe a Press Release "Adelaide Cyclists have banded together to make August "Say Gidday" month"....tee hee. Not sure if the press wants to print happy stories about cycling but who knows..worth a try!!1
