Hello, it's February already! I don't think anyone could argue that January was a bit of a bore - I'm sure you all enjoyed the festival that is the Tour Down Under even if you are not into cycling as sport. It great to see so many cyclists out and about and still making the most of the warm weather. Over the month of January more than 100 new members joined the community. Welcome everyone new.
VOTE FOR THE PHOTO OF THE MONTH
Our January competition was to post photos with the winner being the photo that best celebrated cycling in Adelaide in January. More than 300 photos were uploaded and it was incredibly difficult to choose so it's over to you to vote for the best photo. There are 20 finalists but which one speaks to you? Voting ends this Thursday so help make someone the owner of a Dutch designed Basil Pannier bag valued at $100 courtesy of Gazelle Bikes Australia. If you didn't enter there's another chance to win a bag soon.
NEW SITE DEVELOPMENTS
You might have already noticed a few new little things on the website, such as a new 'Like' button. Soon there will be some other fancy things. You will be able to receive emails as a daily digest or leave it as it is now. Also the ability to comment on members status updates. But the main one is a bit of an overhaul of the look of the site. The first thing to change is the structure of the menus. They are going to be economised and reduced to less tabs with more drop down items. Nothing will go. After nearly two years it is time.
There was such a great response to the Adelaide Cyclists cycling caps before Christmas, and I received many emails asking when they will be available again -- well, now the cap maker, Rocket Fuel Style, is back from her holidays she is ready for round two. If you want an cap you need to pre-order and pay by Friday here. The I Bike ADL t-shirts are always available if you are not a cap person.
GREAT CYCLING COMMUNITY
Just a quite note to say how special it was after the TDU Mutual Community Ride that everyone came together to support one of Adelaide Cyclists best friends. Jim Woods crashed very badly riding home from Strathalbyn and spent a week in Flinders with two broken arms and lacerations from the barbed wire fence he went through. When the news broke the next day there was an outpouring of support for him and lot of the site's members went to visit Jim in hospital or drop him a line. I know I can speak for Jim to say he was overwhelmed, thanks for being there for a friend.
There are heaps of events coming up -- from a track night (Feb 25th TBC) to a time trial to the bollards. If you are just looking for a group ride there are cyclist looking for you. There are also some lectures and talking politics events to put in the diary such as Adelaide Thinker in Residence road safety expert Fred Wegman. Then there is the Bike SA Coast to Coast again on March 6th.
CHARITY RIDE - Square 2 Square
A team of 9 Adelaide Cyclists members will be riding from Melbourne to Adelaide (1075Km) commencing at Federation Square on 21st March, 2011 and finishing in Victoria Square on the 28th March. They aim to raise cancer awareness and to also raise funds for the Flinders Medical Centre's, 'Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer inc the LIVESTRONG Cancer Research Centre. You can help by making a donation.
