Returning from my first ever 100km ride on the "new" road bike and bang! Puncture on Rundle St opposite The Stag as I'm heading out of the city. No drama, I've got a repair kit and plonk myself down on the footpath to fix it. Can't find anything sticking in the tyre surface when I take a look at the side walls... No idea what I hit and I'm glad that tyre got me home! Guess I'll need to get a new rear rim.

I'd check with your LBS first, might be fixable

Looks like it should be ok if you bend it straight with grips or a shifter, but put thin strips of wood on the the jaws to avoid scratching it. You'll still feel that spot when you brake, but it won't be a problem. It'll probably need truing, too.

Robert, the tyre looks quite patchable to me :-)

Bah - got a new rear wheel, tyre and tube. I'll carefully straighten the bent rim and keep it as an emergency spare. The old tyre will go in the bin lest someone has a better idea other than patching?

My local bike shop reckoned I should go back to the East End and try to identify what I hit and photograph it. Even though I often carry my camera I wasn't yesterday. I'll head back in maybe this arvo as I'm thinking it was a metal pin sticking up from the Sunday Markets.

Funnily enough, the wheel doesn't really have a buckle. Maybe 1mm. Compared to my beat up MtBike rear rim it is perfect! LOL!

"Bah - got a new rear wheel," - them's the words of a real cyclist, never miss any opportunity to buy new kit.

what tyre pressure and width you running, out of curiosity!? My money is underinflation...

The wheel is a 700x23c with a vittoria zaffiro tyre.
Don't know the actual pressure as I don't have a gauge but I guess it was pretty well "rock" hard which is how I normally have my tyres pumped up to. TBH, I also was wondering if my pressure for some reason had decreased a bit but no way of knowing that now after the fact. Looked like a classic "snake bite" that is not uncommon when MtBike riding - had a few of those!

Get yourself a gauge mate, as most people without a floor pump w' gauge think ~85psi is 'rock hard'.... there's no way you should have got a snakey and dinged the rim in one go like that....
