Hello,
I think there is evidence enough that this spring has been the worst for magpie swooping and there is no science for it that I can see. Our swoop map has over 130 placemarks and has been viewed over 14,000 times this season. Personally I think all birds are in on it but just the magpies do the dirty work. Why do they do it? Prof. Chris Daniels from UniSA told Carol Whitelock on ABC Radio it's because "they win" by repelling the cyclist from their territory. It'll all be back to normal soon.
LiveStrong Day Ride this Sunday

The event will commence at Kensington Gardens Oval and comprise 3 rides. A 67km ( PDF Map ), 35km ( PDF Map), 20km ( PDF Map). Routes will loop into the Hills and return to the start. Riders can choose any of the distance options and ride at their own pace.
Find out more here or see how many other Adelaide Cyclists members are riding on the events page here.
Amy's Ride - Sunday Nov 6
This Sunday's ride is a great warm-up for the first big cycling event of the year - the Amy Gillett Foundation's Amy's Ride.
Amy's Ride is a recreational mass participation road ride from Adelaide to McLaren Vale. The event raises much need funds for road safety in South Australia, and gives people the opportunity to ride a bike along the Southern Expressway (exclusively closed for the event), wear the exclusive Amy's Ride SA jersey and take on their personal challenge.
Register now for the event and help make this the biggest Amy's Ride yet. Check out the event page on Adelaide Cyclists to see who else is riding.
Ride to Work Day - the ABC wants you.
R2W Day 2011 is on Oct 12 (but of course you ride anyway). There are lots of community events happening so register and check out the website for locations. One not to miss is Bicycle SA's breakfast in Victoria Sq. Do you know someone who wants to ride buy doesn't know where to start? Direct them to BikeSA's new BikeStart website.
ABC Radio's Pool is a social media site where you can share and engage with creative work and collaborate with the people who make it. They want to celebrate cycling and Ride to Work Day by sharing your stories, creative work and thoughts. It could be an image from your daily commute, a shot of your favourite bike, a cycling poem, or a short story all about your love of riding. The project is called My Ride and your works could be featured on ABC Radio and ABC Online.
Take a look at the project here, share your work and put Adelaide on the map of cycling meccas in Australia.
Adelaide Cyclists t-shirts
New t-shirts are still available. The Cat6 Champion is being snapped up by many commuter racers while the Adelaide Cyclists logo is going to be seen all about town - and nice that will be too. There will also be some available in some local bike shops soon too. More...
The jerseys are almost back from the manufacturers and will also be hitting the streets and hills soon. A new ordering offer will be opened up in a week or so so keep an eye out or register your interest on the Jerseys & Kit page here.
Did you know?
Currently there are 1848 members of Adelaide Cyclists but more remarkably there are 5833 photos (and not all of them by the Gawler Wheelers!). This weeks top shot was 'Happiness with my properly fitted Merida' by Greg Willson. One of the top discussions was Watch out for those tram tracks down at the bay by Peter Sampson about how close the tram tracks get to the extended edge of the footpath on Jetty Rd. Like all important issues raised this one has got some media attention so hopefully there might be some more awareness and no more injuries.
The Bicycle Institute's Spring Ride is on again on Sunday October 30.
A family-friendly ride through CBD streets and lanes, and along some of the Parklands Trail - departing 11am and returning for midday BYO picnic lunch. From 1pm to 4pm, we have the use of the Criterium Track for leisurely car-free riding. All bikes welcome, from the historical to the hysterical.
