On Canberra... 2... and restorations...

As foreshadowed yesterday, today was the day of the big ride. We had aimed to complete a 100km journey down around Lake Tuggeranong and back to do a lap of Lake Burley Griffin, but that did not exactly work out. The principal reason for this was that both bikes had issues with malfunctioning gears.

The mountain bike…

On Canberra...

Hi from the Nation's Capital. The above pic is from here. Apparently the advocacy worked!

I have been amazed over the past few days since I arrived in Canberra at the number of cyclists and pedestrians I have seen. Now, given, it has been the long weekend and all the bureaucrats have to have something to do on the weekend, but, considering a population of less than 350,000 ppl,… Continue

On birthdays...

As far as birthdays go, yesterday was pretty cruisy.

First, there was breakfast in bed: scrambled eggs on toast with a side of fresh hot coffee. Nice. Thanks Honey!

Then there was the ride to school: a lazy 4km ish with the two older girls. No big issues, except for the hole that my eldest reported at about the 1/2 way mark... luckily, whom ever had owned the bike previously had put some goo in the tube so she was able to make it the rest of the way to school without the tyre… Continue

Motorists v cyclists: it doesn’t have to be this way

This article appeared today in Crikey.com.au

This week the Adelaide cycling community experienced the death (via the media) of one of its own. Simon Whitley, a 47-year-old husband and father…

Tuesday night rides... and a car.

Last night I attended my second (in a row) Tuesday Night Ride which is organised (or disorganised depending on your perspective) for and by single speed and fixie riders (mainly fixies attending) each Tuesday during the year. …

It wasn't that stormy... but it was dark.

Last night was the riding of the 108th Paris - Roubaix cycling race, but it

was the first in my memory. The race was dry. There were some crashes.

There was a… Continue

It was a dark and stormy night...

Thanks to Snoopy for those immortal words!

Roubaix? Where the hell is that? The Hell in the North.

I had not even heard of Roubaix last week, and now I can't wait to watch the race tomorrow night.

It was with a pang that I listened to my next-door-neighbour talk about the MotoGP racing that is happening this weekend, and I don't even know where they are racing. This time last year I was psyched! I was Pumped! I was ready… Continue

And the rains came down and the floods came up...

This was the song from my Sunday School memory that was going through my

head as I lay in bed this morning listening to the torrents falling

from the clouds. For most who are without a job, I am imagining this

situation would not be that disturbing, but not for me.

I knew we were out of coffee.

I knew I had to go to the shops before I could have a coffee.

I knew I would have to ride.

So as time went on there was an ebb and flow to the sounds… Continue

Saved by the gloves...

This evening I am sitting here a bit sore. I endured my first proper

prang today. It wasn't very serious and the injuries are very minor, but

they could have been worse had it not been for my Levis and my riding

gloves.

Levis have saved my butt more than once (the first time was when I came off a motorbike at 60 odd kph on a hills ride) and today

was no different. Not a mark on the… Continue
