Fitz's Challenge report...

For all those interested, I did complete the 105km Fitz's Challenge ride on Sunday (+10km each way before and after). It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. The outward leg was not too bad with lots of fun (and fast) down-hill sections where I reached speeds of around 80km/h+. The homeward leg was a really hard slog. Most of the last 30km were uphill and all of it was into a strong head wind.

On top of the physical issues, there were hundreds of motorcycles on the road…

Fitz's Challenge fund raising...

Hi there all you Adelaidians! Long time no see.

I thought I would let you all know that I am riding in Fitz's Challenge on the weekend, riding 105km with the University of Canberra Cycling Team (aka Team Lycra) and the Uni is collecting donations on behalf of the Oncology Children's Foundation. I also have a swish new kit to ride in... photos after the ride.

I know that this is a cause that is close to the hearts of many in the AC community, and I also know…

Farewell to old Adelaide forever... well, at least for the next few years!

This is my farewell post. I had been talking of going on a few local rides with AC friends before leaving Adelaide to move to Canberra, but alas, this is not to be.

I got part way through the Williamstown Grand Slam at the end of May and my bottom bracket started making funny noises...…

Bikes STOLEN... grrr!

Hi all! It is with great sadness that I must report that two of our bikes were stolen from our back yard last night.

The first was my wife's beloved Repco Traveller (pictured). This bike has little monetary value, but is Jewlz' primary form of transportation and is sorely…

Meeting Davide...

Today I had the pleasure and the honour to meet one of Italy's and Pro-cycling's up-and-coming stars, and key lead-out man for the new Team Leopard-Trek, Davide Vigano.

It is interesting that the same phrase is true of Davide as I have heard it said of so many elite athletes: down to earth.

Davide is excited about the year ahead and his job as a lead-out man for Daniele Bennati for most of the year. The TDU is Davide's best opportunity for now to seek his own…

Great holiday rides!

Aside from the extra riding that I have been able to fit in around family time these holidays, I have had the great pleasure of being able to take the family out on a few extended jaunts.

First, there was the SuperHero ride, which was a great success according to those whom I have spoken to since…

Corkscrew 1: Wombat 1

Unfortunately, I missed out on riding with some people who I haven't met before due to a mix-up in my understanding of where we were supposed to be meeting...

BUT...

I had a grand day out none the less.

Having missed the meet-up, I decided to head out North of the city, since I don't get many chances to go out that way. I headed out to Gorge Rd via Greenhill and Penfolds Rds and started to plod my way up the Gorge Rd. Off to my right I happened…

A new year... a new life.

I sit writing this Blog post just days out from the one year anniversary of my entry (I could say "re-entry but I was never really a cyclist in the past... I just rode a bike from time to time as I had need) into the world of cycling.

A re-cap for those of you who are new to the forum; My family made a decision in June 2009 to go car-free for 6 months to see how we went. At that point, we decided since we were going ok with that we would continue to live a car-free…

Never work with Children or Animals!

The conversation was over a period of about 5 minutes at after 1:30pm today and went something like this...

Me: I see green glass in the bike lane... I call out... "Glass!!" (accompanying hand signal)

Children: yak yak yak yak...

Me: (turning my head) GLASS GIRLS!!!

Children's bikes: crunch crunch

Children: Where?

Me: *shaking my head* *muttering under breath*

*riding continues*

Chain stuff continued...

So I decided today to put the old chain back on the bike and see what happened. THIS is what happened:

What I SHOULD have done first was clean the chain. In actual fact I only thought this once my hands were GREASY as. It was slippery too. This left me with the little issue of how to hold the chain all together and the tool at the same time... needed another hand really, so I created one! One more use for a paperclip. I hooked the paperclip through the chain either side of the tool so… Continue

First repair job required...

Well, the new bicycle has been going great guns! Helped me take 4 minutes off my previous best time up the Old Freeway in two trips up, been to McLaren Vale on a wet, wet morning, and HAD relegated the Southcott to school taxi service and general hack about town... until now.

This evening I am sitting on the couch trying to decide whether to stay in bed in the morning or take the Southcott up the Old Freeway again as today the Kennedy broke her chain.

I was headed up to… Continue

Another Mad Tuesday climb, another PB...

... well, as near as we can gather it was around the 33minute mark, which would make my second PB in two weeks. At this rate, I will be doing 25minutes by Christmas! lol

We were joined today by Dave, who is doing the Alpine Classic on Jan 23 next year and is racking up the k's at the moment trying to prepare for that.

You will be happy to hear that there were no squeaks today on the ride up The Old Freeway (which is actually the Mt Barker Rd. It doesn't actually become the… Continue

2 in 2 days...

There are times when you get into a groove and you are just pedalling away, with only the Taxi sitting a few feet from your back wheel to worry about... and then there is the unmistakable sound of a car door. Then out of the corner of your eye (after you have already taken evasive actions because instinct says you are in danger of death) you see the car door open.

This was my experience yesterday.

I yelled "Oi! Lookout" as I went past, but it took me looking back from 20 or so… Continue

Long day... Col du Lofty part 3 and a bit more...

Today started for me at 4.45 when I arose and ate a breakfast of WeetBix and Sultanas. I left home at 5 and was sitting at the entrance to the bike path up the old freeway at 5.30. AVO joined me and we waited. He suggested we might be in the wrong place and I said Nooooo. We are definitely in the right place. Oops. Sorry chaps.

We headed up to the bollards and I made it with the welcome company of AVO. Thanks for sticking with me mate!

35 minutes. 2 minutes faster than I did… Continue

Amy's and pre-ride prep...

This has been a long time coming... both me blogging again and Amy's Ride.

Today I had a number of firsts... First 100km ride. First time riding Willunga Hill. First time descending Wickams Hill. First time in a mass ride. First time getting cramp from riding a bike.

The lead-up to the ride was an exciting time too though. I had the ride into the city to collect Jersey etc. I had the cooking of the go-fast bars. I had the packing of the pockets and I had the pinning on of my… Continue

More little victories...

I finally got around to weighing myself today. It has been quite a while since I last stood on the scales and I had some doubts as to whether I had lost any more weight, despite having put a couple of more holes in my belt in the mean time.

What I found was that I weight 86kgs at the moment. 4kg down on the last weigh-in.

In the mean time I have stopped commuting the 15km each way, I have started taking a very slow ride each day doing the 10km round trip taking the girls to… Continue

Sorry legs...

It was a big couple of days to end the week, with my ride up Col d' Lofty on Thursday followed on Friday with the evening at the Superdrome.

Perhaps next time I should time my track ride a little better so as not to coincide with another big ride, but it was a really good workout scooting around the track at >35kph.

It's a pretty scary experience for first timers on that steep banked timber track that creaks as you roll over the boards. The bikes are not silent. They rattle… Continue

Col d' Lofty stage 2

What a difference a couple of weeks makes!

Today I went out with a different plan in mind... the 30 minute Toll Gate to Bollards run up the old freeway/Mt Barker Rd.

I nearly got there too.

No walking.

The two sections I struggled with enough to get off and walk at the end

of August were almost easy by comparison. Don't get me wrong: it was a

hard ride, but here are the times...

Toll Gate to Bollards: 35minutes

Toll Gate to… Continue
