Blog post on helments from a Melbourne economist/libertarian perspective

I know AC has had no shortage of robust debates on the issue of compulsory helment-wearing on Bikes ;)

But I can't resist adding another element ... a recent post by Alan Davies on his "The Melbourne Urbanist" blog lays out the issues quite well in a balanced way I think:…

Some new links on Designing Cities for Cylists

I've recently joined the Sustainable Cities Collective, and today there are a couple of good articles on cities and cyclists:

Bus & Bike battles when lanes done poorly

Buses and cycling are two of the most sustainable modes of transport, and we should be planning for and encouraging both of them if we want to handle a future where we need to produce less green house gases, burn less precious oil, and keep a bit fitter. But over the last few weeks I've been realising, like Heather, that if infrastructure and planning is done badly they can seriously conflict.

Now… Continue

All I want for Christmas is ... a 1904 Davies-Franklin bike

My Mum has been going through the archives of the local Ballarat Courier newspapers' christmas supplement as part of her research, and is coming across interesting ads for all sorts of things. We liked this one for an early Australian made motorcycle:

I also like the suite that's a "Marvel of Cheapness" next to it as well… Continue

Dispatches from Melbourne

Just thought I'd post a quick message here about having returned to my family home in the little hamlet of Clarendon, about 20km from Ballarat, Victoria and 100km from Melbourne. While I really liked being in and cycling through Adelaide for 2 years, I've come here to pursue the next step in my interest into research in Urban and Regional Planning.

One interesting cycling fact that came to my attention is that the national road race… Continue

Ride Review: Cruising the Encounter Bikeway, Victor Harbor to Goolwa

I recently had a mate over from Victoria for a few days of holidays, and was determined to add a bit of rural cycling to the program! Originally planning to check out some cycling in the Barossa, logistics meant we had to choose somewhere in the Fleurieu instead. However this turned out well, as our choice of the “Encounter Bikeway” from Victor Harbor to Goolwa turned out a nice addition to our holiday.

The City of Victor Harbor have put a bit of an effort into this track – we didn't… Continue

Walkscore works for Adelaide now

Not strictly cycling related - but I see the website that calculates a "Walk score" for any location based on distance to day-to-day facilities (shops, restaurants, schools, parks) registered on Google Maps now works for Adelaide.

http://www.walkscore.com

I checked out my street in Brooklyn Park and it gets a score of "48 out of 100 — Car-Dependent", which feels about right to me, although it's missing a few nearby things like some… Continue

Critical Mass not extreme enough for ya? Try Crimanimalz freeway rides

Via another cycling website I came across this group LA group, riding along busy gridlocked freeways to prove they can get around faster than cars in peak hour.

Crazy, but cool ;)

The 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide: Planning the Adelaide that (BISA Members & cyclists) want

(This is from a forthcoming article in BISA's pedal update magazine, but I'll publish here as well as I'm sure Adelaide Cyclists have some good ideas for the 30 year plan for Metropolitan Adelaide too).

You may have seen the bus stop and newspaper advertisements that the State Government is currently doing a major rewrite of Adelaide's Metropolitan Planning Strategy, now to be called the 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide.… Continue

You know it's springtime in Adelaide when ... the Maggies dive bomb ya on your bike!

Making the short ride from my home in Brooklyn Park to the nice bit of linear park along the Torrens where it intersects Henley Beach Rd, I had an experience I've not had since this time last year ... a Magpie dive-bombing me on my bike. It's a specific section of road it happens on - just past the Lockleys golf course.

This particular experience starts with a muffled thud on the back of your helmet, as if someone is politely knocking on a door, or a small kid has hit you a glancing… Continue

Human-Cycle Power in Victoria Park

On the last weekend in July I attended a ‘Pedal Prix’ event for the first time, now named the UniSA Australian HPV Super Series (yes, my Uni has recently signed on as major sponsor, following through on support for the Tour Down Under). The event was the second round of the year’s championship, held in Victoria Park under cloudy skies.

I showed up about an hour after the race start on Sunday morning - for a 9 hour event there’s not a huge rush to see every single minute! I was… Continue
