Those interested in Adelaide’s bicycling history may like to check out a flikr site I have set up illustrating Adelaide’s ‘cargo bike’ culture of the late 1970s and 1980s. See: Adelaide Long Bike flikr There’s also a web page at the Port Adelaide Bicycle User Group’s site at PortBUG. These photos offer a unique glimpse…

France? It was ALL work, honest. No fun at all....

The back story

As some of you know, when I’m not on a bike, I’m behind a camera. That’s where the ‘snappy’ in snappy don comes in. It’s interesting to see people’s reactions when the party question comes up, and I tell them I’m a photographer. Their follow up, if it happens to be a male under 35 years of age, is usually to ask if I photograph lots of lingerie models.

Now, surprising as it may be, 98% of commercial photography actually doesn’t involve lingerie…

Great morning for a ride

After a week or so off the bike due to work pressures it was good to get out for a mountain bike ride this morning.

While driving over to Stirling I was surprised to see plenty of roadies out on the wet roads. Good to see. However, on the way back when the fog had set in it was not so good to see that most of the roadies didn't have any lights. It is winter folks. The weather changes rapidly. Bring your lights regardless of how sunny it may be in the 'burbs when you walk out your…

"I just like to ride my bike and have fun"

A great quote from Melissa Ansett after she won the Ingkerreke Commercial Mountain Bike Enduro at Alice Springs.

“Last time I just rode, this time I was raced it. But I didn’t think I would win, so it was a really nice surprise. Kind of weird in a way as I just enjoy riding, and do a few local races in my area, so to win a big event like this is pretty huge."

“It’s given me some confidence, and I’m not usually confident. But I’m not about to get a coach. I just like to…

Trouble at the mill.....

There  were two complaints last week from   Hazlehurst Senior Citizens Club, who use the hall after us on Saturday . The issues are basically about how people can share space, and could have been solved earlier, and informally, and in a friendly way. However Hazlehurst chose not to do that, and instead   chose to raise them semi-officially, and as OH&S.

The issue was , while Hazlehurst members were arriving,  some  people were working on a bike, near the back door . The bike was…

How many parts need to be missing from a bike, to stop us restoring it? Sometimes, just one wheel nut...

As bike rebuilders, we   hardly ever run into proprietary components, ie components a manufacturer designs,  to specifically fit their type of bike, and no one else’s.  It’s worth-while salvaging  just about every old bike – because   you can use the parts  to repair all sorts of  other bikes.  The other day, though, we struck an exception, with an old Mongoose BMX. ……  .

It arrived with parts missing, so I took it to Wiltja College, for the “Scrap-heap Challenge”, bike-building…

From concept to reality

Just over twelve months ago I had a brief conversation with Ashleigh Moore in regards to doing some type of promo design/ manufacture to help promote CVSA. I explained to Ash that I had this wizz bang CNC woodwork machine that I play with as my "other" hobby. Long story short the outcome was that he mentioned a bike rack design he had seen in a shop somewhere and I should have a go at designing / building something similar. Unfortunately my spare time over the ensuing months was sucked up…

A man walked into a bike shop to buy brake pads and walked out with....

this....

One of the reasons I have been trying (mostly unsuccessfully...anyone after a single speed/fixie, or a renovated hard rubbish bike, single speed with rear coaster brake???) to offload some of my collection of bikes is because I have had my eye on getting a cyclo-cross bike. Not for actually…

Ride2Rescue - Budapest to Istanbul

Month 2 has come to an end and the month of June saw the Ride2Rescue team travel from Budapest, Hungary through Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and arrive in Istanbul, Turkey. We’ve continued our bad habits of wrong turns, punctures and trusting Aaron’s navigational abilities and have had run ins…

Stolen bike: red Specialized Rockhopper

Hey all,

Over the weekend my sister's mountain bike was stolen from an apartment in the Adelaide CBD. It was a red Specialized Rockhopper with black forks.

We were quite attached to the bike, as my sister and I shared many adventures riding the…

Project Abeni Super Record

In my late teens I got my first road bike that wasn't a clunker with friction gears, a blue and white Apollo, with Shimano SIS. I started working part-time while studying and I upgraded to a very speccy white Centurion with Shimano Exage. About this time I broke my leg a couple of times, gave up soccer, and decided to get into road riding more seriously about 1990. The result was my first serious road bike - an ABENI Super Record.…

Life post cars...

I just want to preface this blog by saying that we have not had a car since June last year when our last car was taken off the road.

From time to time on a day off I get to sit in bed and enjoy a cup of Jo with my wife. We sometimes read and sometimes surf the web and always chat about what we are into at the time. This morning Jewlz reminded me that we were supposed to be heading to Croydon Park (we live in Mitchell Park) for a friend's birthday party this afternoon and so I started… Continue

Reform... or Revolution?

It is amazing how much thinking one gets done when one has the hang of turning one's legs over in rhythm with the bike. I had my easiest day of riding in the month that I have been commuting... just from reading some stuff on technique and doing what it said (or what I interpreted it said!)

I have noticed that the bike lanes on my commute home (regardless of which route I take) mostly finish at 6PM. Why? I have also noticed that most bike lanes are only…
