The Bicycle Institutes Chairs Report April 2013

Hi Adelaide Cyclists - I've been off-line from this site for most of the summer but thought that I would share this piece that I wrote for The Bicycle Institutes newsletter, Pedal Update.

The madness that is March in Adelaide is fast receding into memory. The warm nights and hot days are flowing into the autumnal cool that promises winter soon. For us more hardened transport cyclists, the arrival of the cooler…

Training plan part 2, riding with a professional cycling coach

Why should you get professional cycling coaching?

Cricket and footy teams have a coach to watch them play and golf clubs have a resident pro who helps player’s swing and approach to the game so why shouldn’t cyclists who are serious about improving their riding, keeping up with their mates or perhaps the occasional race, have a coach?

Last week I wrote about my fitness…

Putting a positive spin on Adelaide

This is a re-post of the article I wrote for the latest edition of The Bicycle Institute quarterly, Pedal Update.

Considering some of the discussion on Adelaide Cyclists, I thought it would be good to spread the story around a bit.

cheers,

Sophia

Stolen bike

Cannondale F5 mountain bike stolen from backyard in Brompton yesterday afternoon. Access gained by jumping fence at the side rear of yard. Turquoise blue handle grips, 2 different rims, front with french valve. Just in case anyone sees it around the area... spewing as this was my only mode of transport.

First repair job required...

Well, the new bicycle has been going great guns! Helped me take 4 minutes off my previous best time up the Old Freeway in two trips up, been to McLaren Vale on a wet, wet morning, and HAD relegated the Southcott to school taxi service and general hack about town... until now.

This evening I am sitting on the couch trying to decide whether to stay in bed in the morning or take the Southcott up the Old Freeway again as today the Kennedy broke her chain.

I was headed up to… Continue

Checkers Hill - my first attempt

It was one of those cold Adelaide mornings where I just didn't want to get out of bed. Finally, I manned up and got out. I was going to go find Checkers Hill and climb it for the first time. Numerous cyclists are talking about it, as it is an obstacle of the next Tour Down Under Challenge Ride.

I found Checkers Hill Rd, with the help of my trusty iPhone and its GPS. I headed along, admiring the scenery, thinking this isn't going to be that hard. However, I had a niggling suspicion that… Continue

Mid week Afterwork Rides

Started throwing a midweek, afternoon ride (other than the ride home) into the mix.

Was told about a great little circuit in the Adelaide Hills by a mate. This circuit is pretty short (17Km) but is undulating the whole time.…

Motorists v cyclists: it doesn’t have to be this way

This article appeared today in Crikey.com.au

This week the Adelaide cycling community experienced the death (via the media) of one of its own. Simon Whitley, a 47-year-old husband and father…

Life post cars...

I just want to preface this blog by saying that we have not had a car since June last year when our last car was taken off the road.

From time to time on a day off I get to sit in bed and enjoy a cup of Jo with my wife. We sometimes read and sometimes surf the web and always chat about what we are into at the time. This morning Jewlz reminded me that we were supposed to be heading to Croydon Park (we live in Mitchell Park) for a friend's birthday party this afternoon and so I started… Continue

Local Adelaide boy Brandon wins world Unicyclist comp

Behind the News ran a story this week about local Adelaide boy Brandon Nankivell's achievement of being the best Unicyclist (are they allowed in this group?) when he competed in the Unicon XV championships Expert Jr street category [PDF] (think skateboarding).

"I first saw a kid down town riding and I always wanted to… Continue

Do you want a piece of Adelaide cycling history?

Ok folks, up for grabs is one of the original Adelaide Long Bike frames. This is a rare opportunity to own a bit of cycling history

For those of you who don't know, back in the late 80's about 20 - 30 of these bikes were made in a backyard workshop in Adelaide, many of them are still on the road today (I have one that I was riding before I got my Xtracycle). They were so far ahead of their time that we are only now seeing mass market manufactures bringing similar bikes to market.… Continue

Cyclist aware car stickers

From Pedal Pushers Club (US)

The money from these US stickers goes to fund to help raise better awareness of cycling.

Perhaps something like this is Adelaide might work well to show that many cyclists actually drive cars and pay rego like all road users. This is always the argument raised when mainstream media does a cycling safety… Continue
