out of country trip

We are considering doing a group cycling trip out of country. We are wondering if we should obtain International Travel Medical Insurance for the group, even if some people in the group have Individual Health Insurance. I would hate to see an injury cost thousands of dollars with out of network fees. Have any of you had the experience… Continue

All I want for Christmas is ... a 1904 Davies-Franklin bike

My Mum has been going through the archives of the local Ballarat Courier newspapers' christmas supplement as part of her research, and is coming across interesting ads for all sorts of things. We liked this one for an early Australian made motorcycle:

I also like the suite that's a "Marvel of Cheapness" next to it as well… Continue

End of year message to Adelaide Cyclists

Greetings Adelaide Cyclists.

Two and a half years ago I moved to Adelaide from Sydney. I knew it was a good cycling city, I rode the linear park to work and into the CBD but in February this year when the Tour Down Under and Lance fever gripped town it was cycling a cycling obsessed city - so I created this Adelaide Cyclists social network. (I wrote in April on 'How this site came… Continue

Dispatches from Melbourne

Just thought I'd post a quick message here about having returned to my family home in the little hamlet of Clarendon, about 20km from Ballarat, Victoria and 100km from Melbourne. While I really liked being in and cycling through Adelaide for 2 years, I've come here to pursue the next step in my interest into research in Urban and Regional Planning.

One interesting cycling fact that came to my attention is that the national road race… Continue

Should cyclists stop at red lights? A debate on The Bike Show.

Listen to the Bike Show podcast here.

I've become addicted to The Bike Show. Luckily Jack Thurston has an extensive back catalog for me to listen to (check out the two part special on Moulten bicycles).

This was a great debate.… Continue

Veer - a documentary about bicycle culture and community

Veer is an indie documentary looking at the fast growing bicycle culture in the US. It follows five bicycle nuts and the bike sub groups they belong to as well as what it means to be a part of a community and how such movements are formed.

I cannot see any international dates on its release schedule but the DVD can be bought online from Indieflix.com and would…

Classic modern cycling posters

There is something about cycling artwork. Even modern posters (when done well) can become instant classics. These Sram sponsored posters featuring L. Armstrong are no exception.…

Ride Review: Cruising the Encounter Bikeway, Victor Harbor to Goolwa

I recently had a mate over from Victoria for a few days of holidays, and was determined to add a bit of rural cycling to the program! Originally planning to check out some cycling in the Barossa, logistics meant we had to choose somewhere in the Fleurieu instead. However this turned out well, as our choice of the “Encounter Bikeway” from Victor Harbor to Goolwa turned out a nice addition to our holiday.

The City of Victor Harbor have put a bit of an effort into this track – we didn't… Continue

Joining a Bike Club

I recently joined a biking club. The sign-up requires proof of medical insurance or at least short term health insurance. Just wondering if that is a pretty standard deal or not. Seems to make sense on one level while on another it could cause many folks to be unable to join. I'm fairly new to this… Continue

My stuck Ricardo seatpost is finally free!

Readers will know about my long time problem with a stuck seatpost in an old Ricardo 'Elite' steel frame bike I inherited. The classic Adelaide made bike is bit too big for me and with the seatpost immovable it gave me no way of making it a bit easier for me to ride. I had quite a few bloody good goes at it. The last attempt left… Continue
