This was an extra-ordinary ride (for me at least) so I thought I'd try to describe why.
I had been wondering for a while if there was going to be a ride to mark the winter solstice, as there had been a summer solstice ride. The summer version was, as many people who have been on this site for a while would know, a ride that had a degree of tragedy attached to it and personally I was hoping to claim back a bit of fun and achievement for this particular solstice ride***. I…Continue
I received a hand written note the other day. It was quite a novelty and I really liked it. My friend, who sent the note, has very nice handwriting and somehow the brief words in the note were imbued with more of his personality because I could see he had written it himself. These days we use electronic communication so much that apart from often hastily scrawled shopping lists and the occasional birthday card we never see our friends’, or in fact anyone’s handwriting (actually the other…Continue
Today dawned bright and clear for my fourth race event with AHVCC. I excitedly went and picked up AC member Juz who had bravely offered to come and hang out on the side of random roads in the freezing hills this Sunday morning to watch me ride. A fabulous support for me cos I love an audience and as it transpired a useful addition to the timing crew (there is always a shortage of volunteers to man the stopwatches!). Fortunately, as I was running late she had her tea all pre-prepared to come…Continue

Throwing out a random, 'Get ya freebie special TV offer here- and don't forget the steak knives'<click offer is a step into the unknown.
Would it trigger a stampede of riders bringing themselves, their bikes, and their lycra nappied toddlers a hammering on my door? Or would the silent indifference be deafening?
The good news is neither happened. Thankyou to the people…Continue
We're all virgins at something in cycling, as evidenced on the long weekend with some 'newbies' experiencing some climbing for the first time, and maybe cycling wouldn't hold a life-long interest if there wasn't something new thrown at you now and again. For me it is racing.
I have never raced a bike before in my life, except Cat 6 commuter racing of course. As a kid I used to sail dinghys in a…Continue
Looking for anybody interested in a tour from Robe to Adelaide April or May next year.
Cycling along the coorong about 50-60k's a day camping and pubing it, nothing to taxing it wont be a race.
Nothing set in stone yet so if you are interested and would like to contribute to the planing put your hand up.
The other day I removed the towel hanging over my bathroom mirror. Saw a tall bearded fellow standing in some cycling clothing. The first impression was I have aged somewhat in the last 25 years. Gone is the head of hair, greying what remains, a beard that is mostly grey, a face of wringles developing, beginning to push me into the state of old age.
When I consider that in 2007 I weighed 115 kg, now I look thin at 81 kg. The advantages I have gained include having less risk of heart…Continue
A pleasant day out with the Mongoose today. The BSA probably would have been more suitable, but it needs a new chain. Yesterday afternoon was spent getting a s/h fuel pump for the car (so as to not waste $75.00 worth of fuel), instead of fixing the bike.
Left home on the bike at 8:55 for Adelaide Station for the 9:21 train, off at Broadmeadows, arrive at Northern Communities of Hope at 10:05 for the monthly morning worship service. This is only 20 minutes slower than the car, and…Continue
I read the news every day online (Agoniser, The Age and the ABC). About a year ago I read a story about a cyclist being killed on his ride to work. Another cyclist, who didn't know the guy who was killed, had decided to complete his ride to work, to commemorate his life and highlight cycling safety. He was inviting other cyclists to join him on this "Ride for Respect". At the bottom of the story was a link for more information. I wasn't commuting at the time but had a partner who rides and…Continue
No riding this weekend after pulling some muscles in my back. Had an adjustment at my Chiropractor this morning, but he told me to rest up.
I don't know what's worse the back pain or the pain of not being able to ride?
Anyway I'm planning to go watch some of the PACC riders at Mt Pleasant on Sunday.
I was sitting in my car on James Congdon Drive near Bunnings last night, waiting for the RAA, and later, the tow truck. (Dead fuel pump, on my way to pick up my wife from work, from West Beach where evening buses to the city are rare.)
As I was waiting, i was watching the bikes as they passed. All had front lights, although some you would almost need a candle to see if they were on. In the hour or so I was there, only about 3 had what I would consider really good front…Continue
Act one, Scene one: At the top of Mount Lofty.
'So you're Snappy Don?'
(pause, and then in slightly incredulous tones)......'Really?'
The rider may have already asked me who I was before we'd started to climb Lofty. It's likely he was simply checking that he'd heard correctly, having reasoned that snappy was analogous to fast. In his head I'll bet he…Continue
I was able to head out around 3 pm today. I took the closest traffic-free route out of the city for me - up the Lynton-Belair path (I'm probably the only one in the sport I play that rides this path for Interval Training!). Past the production line of 'picking-up' parents and grandparents at the primary school on Sheoak Rd, and into Belair National Park.
No ride on through and up to Crafers today, just a slow treadle along…Continue
Its a nice relaxing afternoon, post morning Nortons Virgin Ride which saw so many awesome people attend the sojourn up that famous hill. I doubt if anybody got close to Jack Bobridges record of 11 min 50 sec for the 5.6 km hill climb, but speed aint everything when there are so many people to enjoy the ride with. It has been very therapeutic for me especially to drag myself out of bed and go and do something meaningful and enjoyable. Yes, there is more to life than cycling, but it is a…Continue
Hello AC Family,

Forgive me Father for I have sinned.
What do you wish to confess my son?
The days have grown shorter, and I have over-fueled and under-ridden. My relationship with my bike is at a low ebb an my weight is at a high tide. What should I do?
Say three Hail Marys, get on you trainer more often, BTFU and RIDE NORTONS ON…Continue
We had 8 riders today, on this hilly route (5 rated climbs) , and for me it was my first ride since I burnt my hand ( Kitchen accident ), so I was a little unsure how I would fair on this trip.
We started by ascending Alexandra drive, which is a fairy steep climb on cold legs, but then were were soon into rolling hills, and heading towards Kersbrook. We had a few welcome stops at the crests of the hills we encountered to let the tail enders catch up,…

Got some sad news today my Great Auntie Doll (Dorothy) died at 10.10am this morning at the age of 89. While we knew her time was near it is still a sad occasion as she was the Matriarch of the family. She was also very special to me as the way she lived her life was an inspiration to me with the love and the care she showed to everyone she knew. Many of what I believe are my good qualities I gained from her.
My Cousin (her Daughter) who was with her when she died said she passed away…Continue
well it was dark, cold and damp but nothing was going to stop me from my return to cycling after 6 weeks on the side lines, not even the doctors words ' i would wait another two weeks' said in case i have another fall b4 the bones are healed.
I joined bec and the crew for the ride to OH and back and it was great to be back on and with a great bunch of people.
On the way back i even found myself slowing and waiting to help mark back to the group after he suddenly pulled over with…Continue
