Surly Long Haul Trucker - First week

The LHT was pressed into commuting duty every day last week and the result has left me very happy with my purchase. Every day I benefited from the comfortable riding position and the fact that I didn't have to carry a pack on my back.

The Brooks B17 saddle is slowly breaking in after only 140km. I've been told it takes 1000km for them to break in properly but I am already very happy with it. The one benefit of the Brooks that nobody seems to mention is that it flexes a little when… Continue

Surly Long Haul Trucker - First ride

What a great day to get out on the bike. The early morning threat of rain has disappeared and now it is cool, clear and overcast with a little bit of a breeze.

So, where to go on my first ride on the Long Haul Trucker (LHT)? Somewhere with climbs, corners, descents, varying road surfaces that is an enjoyable ride. A return trip to Mt Lofty summit was an obvious choice.

First a description of the bike. It has 60cm frame and components as described on the… Continue

Surly Long Haul Trucker - Purchasing experience

It is not often that I'm impressed with service I have received these days but the service provided by Pete and Lia from Bio-Mechanics Cycles and Repairs deserves to be mentioned.

After Lia contacted me on this site to let me know they sold Surly bikes I rode into their shop the next day. Pete spent an hour checking my fit on my current bike and discussing options and possibilities. I was very comfortable that he'd listened to what I wanted and… Continue

Great racks

Safe places to lock up you bike is an ongoing issue - at the station, in the city, uni or workplaces by at sometime we all have to secure it to a pole, dedicated bike rack or tree.

Dear Portland, OR - best cycling city in the world?

I romanticise places too easily. Last week I spent a good hour looking at pictures of Iceland, then there is the Alaska from Northern Exposure, New Zealand from in flight magazines gets me interested with pictures of those cosy cafes and the draw of coffee and brownies, Vietnam for, amongst a list if things, a cycling trip. I went to the lake district drawn from memories if reading Swallows and Amazons and Stonehenge for the mystic… and then there is Portland Oregon. Home of some… Continue
