Fast and Safe - Cycle Community from Mt Barker to City

I have a work colleague just arrived from the UK and wishes to commute to work in the city from Mt Barker on his bike.

He has asked me which is the quickest and safest way. Can anyone help with providing this information?

On Canberra... 2... and restorations...

As foreshadowed yesterday, today was the day of the big ride. We had aimed to complete a 100km journey down around Lake Tuggeranong and back to do a lap of Lake Burley Griffin, but that did not exactly work out. The principal reason for this was that both bikes had issues with malfunctioning gears.

On birthdays...

As far as birthdays go, yesterday was pretty cruisy.



First, there was breakfast in bed: scrambled eggs on toast with a side of fresh hot coffee. Nice. Thanks Honey!



Then there was the ride to school: a lazy 4km ish with the two older girls. No big issues, except for the hole that my eldest reported at about the 1/2 way mark... luckily, whom ever had owned the bike previously had put some goo in the tube so she was able to make it the rest of the way to school without the tyre… Continue

Blood pressure, anger and that sense of entitlement..

I am a careful and courteous cyclist. I ride a lot, everyday. I ride within the law, signal, don’t run red lights, ride defensively, and most of the time wear highly visible clothing.

Newb so bear with me....Advise on group rides

OK so there is something I've been wondering about regarding group/bunch riding. Do you actually achieve and maintain significantly higher speeds whilst travelling in a group.

Logic tells me that there would be benifit with earodynamics, etc, but I have noticed recently after jumping into a group that broke off from the ride for respect ride that I was able to very comfortably sit on 35km/hr with most of the time spent at 40km/hr. Typically I find myself working harder to keep…

Linear park blocked

Does anyone know what the story is with the linear park bike path been blocked east of Hackney Rd. It appears to be related to the works on the adjacent private property, but there are no signs to say how long it will be blocked for.

Road funding sources?

Hi all,


My curiosities have finally been pushed to their limits, and I'm now seeking solid factual evidence of where road funding comes from. I'm aware that the federal government sponsors major national highways/freeways. But the claims of motorists for cyclists to pay registration fees so they are 'entitled' to our right to ride on roads just seems flawed. Firstly, I can't see that the cost of maintaining and developing roads can be solely funded by registration fees…

Thought bubble 2 of 2 - Linear Park - what it is now and ideas for the future of Adelaide as a cycling city

I use to ride Linear Park a lot. At one time I lived in Brompton and worked in Glenelg, so it was part of my daily commute. Another time, I had a close friend in Fulham and I was in Magill, so the route was my cross-town ride. These days I use the route to ride from the eastern side of town into the University or the city.



Recently I rode on Linear Park a number of times in one day, both during the daylight hours, and at night, and was struck with several observations.

Thought bubble 1 of 2 - Neighbourhood Speed Zones and the purpose of Pedestrian Crossings

I have had one too many close calls at pedestrian crossings. Every time, driver behaviour is at fault. Whether intentionally speeding up to ‘get through’, and running a light that’s just turned red, to not noticing the red (or the pedestrians using the crossing), and driving straight through. Obviously, it is not the majority of drivers who engage in this sort of behaviour, but it only takes one crash between a fast moving metal box and the vulnerable flesh of a pedestrian to turn that… Continue
