Last year I was fortunate to be picked as test rider for Merida Australia and I get to try a road bike of theirs for three years in succession. 2012 was fantastic and I loved every ride on that bike,…Continue

OK, It's not as simple as running down to the LBS and grabbing these new tyres, but it's nice to see that new developments in cycling aren't just aimed at the sport /pro end of town. This kickstarter…Continue

Profile Information

What bikes do you ride?
Shiny new Merida Scultura Pro 907E courtesy of Merida Bikes Australia. It's the second of three bikes in three years provided by Merida Bikes Australia for me to ''test ride''.

Also in the shed:
Stan aka 'the Mongrel', ol yellow fixie for commuting and for wandering down to the pub or shops. A hard-rubbish 70's Standish steel frame brought back to life with $100 bucks worth of ebay parts- brings me a lot of pleasure on commutes and social city rides.

Kal, the dirty red Kalahari MTB for going bush on the occasional dirty weekend. I'm no single-track expert, but it's a breath of fresh air getting off the black-top from time to time.
When do you ride?
Weekends, Commute, Mountain Biking
..perhaps some more information about yourself for your profile page
When I'm not riding my bike, I'm a commercial photographer.
Website, blog, interest group address.

2013 running of the Col du Lofty Champagne Handicap

Posted on November 7, 2012 at 11:00 4 Comments

The first Tuesday in November is known across the nation as ‘cup day’; the race that wakes the nation, Adelaide’s Col du Lofty Champagne Handicap. Our steeds are made of carbon and alloy rather than flesh and blood, and the ‘jockeys’ are a bit of mixed bag but it’s at least as much fun as that other big race they hold in Melbourne.

Mount Lofty is a favourite destination for weekday social riders in Adelaide. It’s so close to town, and has a dedicated bike path for much the route.… Continue

France? It was ALL work, honest. No fun at all....

The back story

As some of you know, when I’m not on a bike, I’m behind a camera. That’s where the ‘snappy’ in snappy don comes in. It’s interesting to see people’s reactions when the party question comes up, and I tell them I’m a photographer. Their follow up, if it happens to be a male under 35 years of age, is usually to ask if I photograph lots of lingerie models.

Now, surprising as it may be, 98% of commercial photography actually doesn’t involve lingerie…

Spring is Here

SPRING IS HERE

If morning rides have seen you return home

And it’s still barely dawn,

Spring is Coming.

If the pain in your legs is nothing compared

To the stinging cold of hail on your cheeks,

Spring is Coming.

If the bike has been barely wiped clean of grime

Before it’s covered in filth on the very next ride,

Spring is Coming

If preparing to ride is an endless chore

Of donning layer after layer of winter…

Feels as Good as it Looks

I love to ride a bike. And I enjoy writing about riding a bike. But putting A plus B together does not make me C - “a bike reviewer”.

Until now my experience of riding road bikes has been n=1. Like most of us, I didn’t get the opportunity to test ride a stable of different models before I made my choice. Instead, I did some research. I bought magazines, I trawled the internet for specifications, I asked some buddies (who each said that their own bike was the best in the world) and…

Don, sounds like no ride (old-fashioned) on the same day as the Bay to Birdwood  - Darren's had too much on his plate to organise one.  BJ
