designing a better bike

Posted on June 8, 2011 at 21:00 1 Comment

Right now on ABC TV show The New Inventors.

A two-wheeler recumbent; cyclist as high as on average bicycle for better vision of traffic; recumbent position for aerodynamics; but front wheel drive with shorter chain so more efficient than recumbent; a telescopic 'head stem'.

Faster than other bikes. Holds the world record for women's 100-mile speed.

Called the Cruzbike. Inventor John Tolhurst. Price about $4,500. Won tonight's episode on The New Inventors.

How to buy or make a ruling device to show depth of potholes or utility cover-lids, while photographing? Can manage if one person holding a rule, and the other person focusing a camera to take a close-up showing the measurement. But cannot do on my own with current tools.

I carry a tape measure and flat edge (clipboard) to measure some cycling hazards I see while cycling. But there are times when one wants to photograph to persuade the authority to fix, or proof if the hazard is a…

Hi Heather, the City of Prospect has about a dozen keen riders that live locally.  They would like to start up a cycling club.  Would BUG  be the place to see if anyone else is interested and who else may like to join or be involved. are there cycling clubs already out there we do not know of?

We are keen to support them but would love some further recomendations and guidance, rather than jumping in and providing something that does not cater to the local community.

Thanks Sally-Anne

Hi Heather,

I don't really have any extra challenges riding on the road. I am an amputee and am missing my left hand but I use a prosthesis and don't really have any trouble riding. I also do track, and I'd encourage any athletes with disabilities (vision impaired or otherwise) to come out to the velodrome on a Friday night at 7pm to try track and meet the para team. I join regular group rides and train most days on the road without too much trouble!

which suits me fine.

Hi Heather. Re photos of Adams Road I'll try to get there on the weekend sometime. In the meantime (or in case I forget or don't find time to go that way), here's Google Streetview (not good photos but they show the point).

permanent bike lane: http://goo.gl/maps/IWKog

approaching the first crossing: http://goo.gl/maps/UKBjB no clue that there is a hazard in the bike lane ahead.

First crossing (Playford Primary): http://goo.gl/maps/K9Nue bikelanes are not actually painted across the crossing, but they go up to the stop line already very narrow and restart immediately after  the pedestrian crossing.

Second crossing (Catherine McAuley) http://goo.gl/maps/Wmk3q shows that the roadwork signs were a hazard the day Google passed,  too!

Does that help? Responsible agency is probably City of Playford.

Only just saw you reply But it's South rd 209-211 between Torrens rd and hawker st east side going by Google map's says Ridleyton. Sign over top of building Croydon Motors 83462507 and on Google street veiw there is a taxi parked on the footpath

Brompton Primary School is that the one on the north side of Torrens rd with the car park on the corner of Baker st? If it is it'll be the Greeks straight across the rd also on the corner of that car park on baker st the 1st bush on the west side is really blocking the view of oncoming traffic coming south down baker street from the footpath

Hi Heather,

Thanks for the welcome :-) As a Dutchie I probably drive my pushbike(s) more than our car. I use a bike for commuting as well I love race cycling and mountain biking. Indeed I have some thoughts on the cycling infrastructure in Adelaide in comparison to The Netherlands. The first thing what should be banned is that cars are allowed to park on bike lanes. A good improvement is already coloring the bike lanes, but why not go for elevated bike paths along roads? Like this: elevated bike path . Maybe It could be a long term goal. There is enough space here, roads are more than width enough. Another idea is to make a two way bike (only!) path along the ring way on the (inner) side of the Parklands. I like the bike paths in the Parklands, but the layout is not really clever for commuting. Too much 'meandering'. For commuting you need proper, fast (bikes only!; not shared with pedestrians) and straight connections.

I would say, why not got to The Netherlands once and see how we arranged our cycling infrastructure. Reinventing the wheel is not necessary.

Cheers, Bas

Hi Heather

i have sent you some links that will demonstrate the product,  it is exactly like the clear skins you buy to protect the screens of mobile phones but are heavy duty and have variable shapes for different positions on the bike. Some are clear, some in carbon colours but most of all they work a treat, no cable rub into frames and i use them when i mount lights etc. you cant see them until your really close to see them

you get the idea, i swear by the system ex but have used others as well. hope this helps or makes sense.

cheers
