To assist with climbing & not grinding away up long hill rides considering a move to a compact crankset 50/34. Would including the compact be like adding 1 to 2 lower gears & losing 1 to 2…Continue

"If you were a partly self funded retiree watching interest rates plummet, you might be on a budget similar to mine.  My prepaid mobile, used and carried for emergencies, costs me less than $5 a month ! "

"I actually use my 52 x 21 quite a bit, (i have a 23, 25, 28 above it) but then I also use my 52 x 11 quite a bit too on the downhills around the place, still spin it out at 125+ rpm, 70-75 kph."

"Another very good reference, though maybe a bit detailed for some is this link to a PDF on bicycle chain / sprocket efficiency. Go to page 5 of the PDF for a simple chart on power loss difference between a 52 x 11 and say a 52 x 21 - - the latter…"

"That is correct. A 50 x 11 or 12 is not as mechanically efficient as say a 54 with something further up the cassette. An 11 tooth sprocket is regarded as on the limit as far as chordal action is concerned. See explanation…"

"Very interesting point from the Giro commentary, I've often heard the comment, "the pro's run a 54 chainring" .... One of the commentators mentioned that they run a bigger front chainring to allow them to run a little higher up…"

"Thats my point Tez. Why do you feel the need to ride harder gears at a lower cadence than even a pro on epo would? But hey, whatever works for you mate. :)"

"Not questioning your fitness Terry. Just your ignorance of the importance of gear selection to ensure more efficient cadence aka better power production for the same given effort. I know riders that are fitter than me but Im faster than them as I…"

"DR, you are clearly not taking many things into consideration. First of all, 27 kph average on this particular ride is considered well above what most people over 50 could do !   It was actually quite a "cruisey" ride for me on…"

Gday ADL cyclists, I am a keen cyclist moving to ADL from Melb in July & will be living in Kingswood. Wanting to join a SA  cycling club/group to get to know the area, meet fellow riders & do some weekend rides.

Any help & or suggestions appreciated. Thanks Troy

Troy - also moving to Adelaide in July (from Sydney)  Will most likely be based in the hills around Stirling way.  Happy to hook up for a ride once settled.  I already have a few cycling mates based in Adelaide so feel free to join in - unless you put too much V pain in...
