We first met Brenna last October when she rode into our town and couch-surfed with us on her way to a bicycle mechanic's course on nearby Quadra Island. She is a lovely, wise young woman who had…Continue

"The point about oil bath vs grease I think is valid from a self service perspective. A non-mechanically minded person can easily change the oil from the Alfine 11, which makes it a good choice for people who want an easy simple to ride and maintain…"

"Have you compared an Alfine 11 and an Alfine 8? I have an 11 which has about 10,000kms on it - I am thinking about building up another wheel with an 8 as they are pretty cheap - about US$200 - so I can tinker with the 11 and not feel like I may get…"

"The Alfine 11 has evenly spaced gear ratios, helical-cut gears rather than straight cut for smoother operation and uses oil rather than grease meaning that you don't need to open it up to perform your periodic maintenance. The Alfine 8 has none…"

Bicycle mechanic on a mission

We first met Brenna last October when she rode into our town and couch-surfed with us on her way to a bicycle mechanic's course on nearby Quadra Island. She is a lovely, wise young woman who had already ridden solo across Canada and then from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt - on a cheap old bike. She's tough.I'm posting about her now because she was back here for a visit and is now off to Arizona and then back to South Africa where she is participating in a program to teach poor and…See More

"Price is a huge difference between the Rohloff and Shimano Alfine series. Rohloff is basically $1500, where as the Alfine 11 is $550. You can buy 3 Alfine 11's for the price of 1 Rohloff. However you might also consider the Alfine 8. The major…"

"When I was living in WA, I saw a bike built up with a Rohloff rear hub and two chain rings on the front. Front and rear derailleurs required of course, but it worked very well - - giving a genuine high and low range.  "

"Alfine 11 may be lighter, however by all reports on gear inches per change, the Rohloff trounces them all with the equidistant percentage change in ratio per gear and a much wider gear range.  The Rohloff is much stronger than the Alfine and…"

"I got an Avanti Inc2 from Lifecycles. I've done nearly 1500 kms on it so far and the belt has been flawless. The eccentric BB needs periodic re-tensioning (really not that frequently, every 4-6 months) but that is the only real maintenance need…"

What bikes do you ride?
1995 Kona Dawg
When do you ride?
Mountain Biking
..perhaps some more information about yourself for your profile page
I am a long time cyclist who is expecting to move from my home here on the West coast of Canada to Adelaide within the next year or so. I like to ride my mountain bike on the roads and in the trails, generally with my dog running along beside me. Looking forward to riding in and around Adelaide, though, sadly, my dog will be staying here because of the quarantine process and the hot climate.

Thought I could see the helmet outline, especially at the back. Removed my comment of 3 minutes ago from the discussion before it becomes the hackneyed hijack. Wish I had not responded earlier.

I was living in Canada for 1 yr as the first time to live to not original country. I could get much experience without cycling. If Igot a chance to live there again, I could be happy.
