Firstly, I'm not knocking Amy's ride or those who took part, though the organisers could have arranged for better weather (glad it was you, not me).Jan and I decided to head to our favourite coffee…Continue

New models

I just dropped into Tailwind to grab a brake lever (which I probably don't need so it was a good buy) and there, leaning arrogantly against some cheap and nasty Giants, was a lovely new Merida. Now…Continue

Does anyone know when the Seacombe Rd bridge over the Expressway will reopen? Not this week by the looks of it.I've felt the loss of this because one of my favourite routes was down Expressway Hill…Continue

Profile Information

What bikes do you ride?
Europa
HIllbrick
When do you ride?
Weekends, Commute
..perhaps some more information about yourself for your profile page
I ride what works for me ... which puts me at odds with the cycling industry and many 'roadies'. My bikes are road sportsters, but I'm shunning gears and riding fixed gear more and more ... which is fun seeing I live in the southern foothills.

Europa reborn ... again

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 15:58 2 Comments

Yup, my beloved old Europa has undergone yet another metamorphosis.

I bought this old bike in the mid-eighties and used her on and off for years. Typically, I'd start riding her during the TdF and some years, would stop a few months later while other years, I'd still be riding when the next TdF came around. In the late nineties, the front dr broke and I stopped riding. Six years ago, I repaired things and got back into riding. She served as a stripped down version of her earlier…

Recycled Road Chief

Posted on July 11, 2011 at 16:45 3 Comments

You've met this old bike before, when she was done up for bike polo duties. Well, she's moved on ... again.

A bit of history, I bought this bike ... frame (coz that's all that's left) for $20 from ebay. The components were very low end and the wheels steel rimmed horrors with some of the cheapest hubs I've ever seen. Surprisingly though, the frame is quite light and seems quite sound. Nice to ride too. Sure, it'd be plain guage tubing but a nice frame for all that.

I…

Of wogs and rides and trying to kill me kids

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 10:01 2 Comments

I've luxuriated in the arms of a full on throat virus this last week - coughing, spluttering, loopy thinking (even by my standards). Lost a week at work, got thoroughly bored with myself and managed to give it to my son, just as he started his year 12 exams - yup, he did one of the big maths subjects, hardly able to talk.

So things have been interesting.

For the record - the term 'wog' is Australese for an illness ... though it was also used in the past as a derogative term… Continue

I have no idea what old bikes are worth, in dollar terms.  My own Gitane cost me $20 from the local junk/art dealer, and about $280 more to bring it up to what is useable for me.  Worth it? Yes, of course.  Economically rational? No way.  (Not that economics is rational - someone farts on Wall St, and share prices tumble.)

Well... both but it's an oldie but a goldie of gags!

BTW thanks for all your input and enthusiasm for the website (and community). It's really great there is such a wide range of bicycle users as members and it's great when new visitors come along they don't just see the obvious lycra & carbon conversations.

Hope we can meet up some time.
Cheers
Angus
