Hi, What a great idea this forum is. I'm glad to have stumbled across it whilst desperately seeking to find parts to fix my bike. I've got a Trek that I bought c1994 and my caring partner decided that it would be nice to change the pedals, you know, get rid of the old plasticy ones for a model with greater grip for extra safety and all that. - Hi Kerri. Yep, definitely happy to help you out there.
The bottom bracket is the 'axle' of the pedals, if that makes sense. It's point around which your cranks turn. The spindle is the part that rotates and to which the pedals attach.
The pedals themselves will have a hole in them that matches the shape of that spindle. If the hold is square, it's a square tapered bottom bracket. I'm reasonably certain that your bike features just such a bottom bracket.
So all you need now is a crankset, which I have for you. I'll have to look at the part in question. I don't super that it's a particularly high-end component but it will probably match what you have there and certainly do the job for commuting et cetera.
