I am pleased to say that a couple of long standing issues for cyclists along my route to work have been addressed in the past couple of weeks:

 

Firstly, the "loading zone" outside Vale Park Primary School along Ascot Ave which had times conflicting with the bike lane has finally had the morning loading zone times removed.   On a good day, I can be doing 60km along this stretch, and so to have cars parked in the bike lane was not good, but until now the drivers had a defense.  …

Ans. When it's an "Advisory Treatment".



Call me naive and gullible, but I always considered that when there was a painted line separating cars and bicycles with bicycles stencils painted at regular intervals along the bicycle side of the line, that this was a designated bicycle lane. Not so.

While many of us carry water when we go for a ride, not everyone does and sometimes they need a drink and sometime we run out and need to top up. Often all we want and need is clean fresh water, but it can sometimes it can be hard to find somewhere we can access it. Back in April I wrote to the Transport Minister regarding some concerns I had in relation to the lack of protection SA law provides to cyclists. I have finally received a response from the acting minister, Paul Holloway, and thought some of the information was worth sharing. My main concern was that my understanding of the law was that cyclists must give way to vehicles turning left in front of them even when in a bicycle lane. I see entries for the 2011 Challenge Tour are now open. The route will be from Norwood to Strathabyn which is a little disappointing since we did Norwood this year and the Norwood council seems to be anti cycling actually ripping out bike lines while most progressive councils are adding in new ones. I would also have expected a bit more fan fair and an appearance by Media Mike to announce the route.
