Cyclist and Pedestrian Detours for Southern Expressway Duplication

This message has been generated as part of our ongoing commitment to keep the cycling community informed about the Southern Expressway duplication project.

Construction of the Southern Expressway duplication is continuing and the coming weeks will see changes to current pedestrian/cyclist detours. Detours will be in place with traffic management and directional signage for guidance. A summary of these detours is as follows:

Coast to Vines (Noarlunga Downs/Huntfield Heights) - The Coast to Vines Trail underpass at the southern point of the Southern Expressway re-opens today.
Perry Path (Noarlunga Downs/Huntfield Heights) - the closure of Perry Path will coincide with this re-opening, closing on 11th September weather permitting. A detour will be in place on Corrimal Ave, River Road, Coast to Vines Trail and the shared-use trail to the east of the Southern Expressway.

Detours also remain in place for the following bridge/road closures:

Seacombe Road
Sturt River Underpass
O’Sullivan Beach Road
Elizabeth Road
Moore Road

For more detail about cyclist and pedestrian detours please call the project information line 1300 626 097, or email dpti.southernexpressway@sa.gov.au Additional Project information can also be found at www.infrastrucutre.sa.gov.au

The Southern Expressway duplication team will continue to keep the cycling community updated when detours and changes to cycleway/paths are implemented.

August  31 - Some duplication progress

August 16

Cyclist and Pedestrian Detours for Southern Expressway Duplication

Construction of the Southern Expressway duplication is continuing and the coming weeks will see more pedestrian/cyclist detours. Detours will be in place with traffic management and directional signage for guidance. A summary of these detours is as follows:

  • · Elizabeth Road/Beach Road (Morphett Vale/Hackham West): The shared use path to the east of the Southern Expressway has been detoured and will remain closed for the duration of the bridge/interchange construction at Beach Road (mid 2013). The detour utilises Columba St, Benet St, Elizabeth Rd, Selina St and a section of newly laid unsealed path.
  • · Lander Road Closure (Trott Park/O’Halloran Hill): the duplication of the Lander Road Overpass requires Lander Road to be closed from 17 August until late 2012. A detour for east/west travel will be implemented which will detour both cyclist and pedestrians onto Erin Place, Craig Avenue, the Patrick Jonker Veloway, Coast to Vines Trail and Young St. The section of Veloway between Craig Ave and ‘the tunnels’ will be temporarily converted to a shared use path. Signage for the detour and of the changed traffic conditions will be implemented on site.
  • · Coast to Vines and Perry Path (Noarlunga Downs/Huntfield Heights): The Coast to Vines Trail underpass at the southern point of the Southern Expressway is due to re-open on 30th August 2012. The closure of Perry Path will coincide with this re-opening, with a detour on Corrimal Ave, River Road, Coast to Vines Trail and the shared-use trail to the east of the Southern Expressway.

Detours also remain in place for the following bridge/road closures:
· Seacombe Road

  • · Sturt River Underpass
  • · O’Sullivan Beach Road
  • · Elizabeth Road
  • · Moore Road

July 10 - Veloway closures for blasting

Ongoing veloway closures for controlled blasting

As part of the Southern Expressway Duplication a series of controlled blasts are required at the Darlington Escarpment. The blasts are designed to loosen underground rock to enable construction of the Southern Expressway in this location. The veloway will be subject to ongoing short term closures to ensure public safety during controlled blasting. Given the close proximity of the Patrick Jonker Veloway to the controlled blasting activities, cyclists will not be able to access the veloway between Majors Road and Seacombe Road for up to 1.5 hours as a safety precaution when blasting is occurring.

  • Veloway closed from Mid-July (between Majors Road and Seacombe Road) from 12.00pm - 1.30pm on days of blasting.
  • Blasting is expected to occur two to three times a week and continue for the next 9 months.

Cyclists can register to receive blast notifications and will receive SMS notice in advance of each short term closure. To register for advanced blast notice, please call 1300 626 097 or email SEDenquiries@bajvsed.com.au

On-site signage will also be in place to notify cyclists of the status of access to the veloway.

For more detailed information about the controlled blasting of the escarpment please visit www.dpti.sa.gov.au/southern_expressway_duplication

This email is to inform you of upcoming short-term closures to the veloway along the Southern Expressway. These closures are required for ETSA service relocation associated with the Southern Expressway duplication and are necessary to ensure public safety. The closures will affect the section of veloway between Majors Road and Lander Road. Detours will be put in place and will be marked with directional signage and detour maps. The detour route is approximately 1.6km longer than the existing 2.4m of closed veloway and utilises the road network along Majors Road, Adams Road, Heysen Drive and Lander Road.

The details of the short-term closures are as follows:

· Thursday 7th June 2012, from 7am to 7pm – the veloway will be closed between Majors Road and Lander Road. Although the Expressway will remain open at this time, the ETSA works will impact on the veloway only.

· Saturday and Sunday 16th and 17th June 2012: the veloway will be closed from 7am on the 16th and reopening late Sunday evening to allow for commuting traffic on the Monday morning (18th June). The Southern Expressway will also be closed to motorist traffic on the 16th and 17th June.

The Cycle Instead Journey Planner has been updated. Although the aforementioned short-term closures will not be updated on the Journey Planner (as they are only required for a short time), all longer term closures have been updated. Modifications have been made to the cycling network around the Southern Expressway duplication, where several bridges are closed and there are detours for the Patrick Jonker Bikeway and the Coast to Vines as a result. This includes path closures and temporary paths built. The Cycle Instead Journey Planner is a good way for users of the cycling network in the area to find the best way around closures, and it will be kept up to date with as the works progress in the area. http://maps.sa.gov.au/cycleinstead/

For more detail about cyclist and pedestrian detours please call the project information line 1300 626 097, or email dpti.southernexpressway@sa.gov.au Additional Project information can also be found at www.infrastrucutre.sa.gov.au
