We ride to Mt Lofty via the Old Freeway every Tuesday morning. We meet at the corner of Portrush Rd and Mt Barker Rd (aka the Freeway) next to the big gum tree (NOT at the Tollgates) at 5:50am and aim to be back at the start by 7:00 am.

The ride takes place each week all year round. About the only time we won't be riding is if its raining, the rain radar shows rain on Mt Lofty or we are out of town.
Numbers currently vary from 2-6 riders.
Pace is moderate (i.e. will suit riders who can ride from the traffic lights to the bollards in 27-35 minutes).
We regroup at Eagle on the Hill and the Bollards and continue on to Mt Lofty, although some people choose to head home at the Bollards.
Coffee and bakery treats on offer around once a month.
Good lights essential during the winter months.
The group Discussion Forum and Comment wall frequently gets off-topic and we some-times engage in a bit of trash talk. But that's OK cos that's what cycling is all about, right?
Don't be put off by our grandiose ride reports...its amazing how you can turn a pootle up a hill into a major UCI bike race with the right words.

Comment by wujim on Tuesday it seems like a 25km ride to the start has one upside apart from all the other downsides, always get there warmed up and ready to hit up Lofty.....
some say that your physical peak during the day is between 3-4pm, although I've never hit up a climb for a PB during those times..
Comment by Rob Wood on Tuesday It may well be different person to person. As my TMMLM attendace record suggests, im not great in the mornings and find I need some food and a bit of time to hit peak potential. There is likely a large range between individuals.
I was also going to make the same point James, my best times (particularly my top 3 freeway) are often with sore legs from a previous days effort. Not sure why, just an observation.

My best time on The Old Freeway was set during the middle of the day (and I'd done quick times on Lynton / Sheoak prior), as was WG which I did during a lunchbreak (and I'd had a big ride in the hills before work).
Comment by Shane Sody on Tuesday I'd like to know whether there's any physical reason for that - rolling resistance on dark cold bitumen versus light warmer bitumen? It's a new concept to me. All my PRs have been set at 5.50am.
Comment by wujim on Tuesday I find that in the arvo I can take a minute off for the same perceived effort. Never ride in the afternoons though, go figure.
And yeah under 30 from the lights in the morning is a spritely effort indeed.
