We ride to Mt Lofty via the Old Freeway every Tuesday morning. We meet at the corner of Portrush Rd and Mt Barker Rd (aka the Freeway) next to the big gum tree (NOT at the Tollgates) at 5:50am and aim to be back at the start by 7:00 am.
Location: Old Freeway to Mt Lofty and return

The ride takes place each week all year round. About the only time we won't be riding is if its raining, the rain radar shows rain on Mt Lofty or we are out of town.
Numbers currently vary from 2-6 riders.
Pace is moderate (i.e. will suit riders who can ride from the traffic lights to the bollards in 27-35 minutes).
We regroup at Eagle on the Hill and the Bollards and continue on to Mt Lofty, although some people choose to head home at the Bollards.
Coffee and bakery treats on offer around once a month.
Good lights essential during the winter months.
The group Discussion Forum and Comment wall frequently gets off-topic and we some-times engage in a bit of trash talk. But that's OK cos that's what cycling is all about, right?
Don't be put off by our grandiose ride reports...its amazing how you can turn a pootle up a hill into a major UCI bike race with the right words.

Comment by Dahondude on May 1, 2012 at 10:42 Despite the threat of rain we had a super morning on the hill. Just me and Snappy, but we picked up a straggler - Brian - whose front light had died so he rode with us and our lights. Lots of interesting discussion on the way up and we were met by a big group of Morris Dancers on top of Mt Lofty (Steve were you hiding in amongst them?), jangling away with their bells and singing in the dawn for the first day of May. Beautiful sunrise and an even better view on the way down with a massive rainbow emerging from the Gulf. Gold :-)
Comment by Dahondude on April 30, 2012 at 22:31 Thanks for the heads up Richard. Good luck with the bike fit and the ride on the weekend. Looking more and more like a DNS for me given the rain prediction at dawn.
Comment by Richard Smith on April 30, 2012 at 19:38 Was going to get in before the weather doom and gloom posts started, but was obviously too slow! The real reason I'll be AWOL tomorrow is that - ahem - I'm tapering for the Tour De Clare.
OK - so you don't believe that - worth a try.
Actually - have part 2 of sorting out bike fit tomorrow, - change of handle bars (drop & reach) - Debating on whether to post a forum question on the merits of Carbon vs Ally - sure to get a few hits!
BTW - signs on the freeway all day today announcing tomorrow is TMT (Tunnel Maintenance Tuesday) - watch out for Knuckleheads on old road trying to dodge the slow down!

Comment by Dahondude on April 30, 2012 at 13:48 Chaps and chapettes,
Weather forecast is looking a little dodgy for tomorrow morning. We may or may not get home before the forecast rain. Another day for riding the Ridley I suspect.
cheers

Glad I wasn't picking my nose or my arse!
Comment by Dahondude on April 25, 2012 at 23:12 Lads we need to try and get photographed by this guy...http://superflat.com.au/
He hangs around the Old Freeway a few times a week, but I fear we are home by the time he fires up the camera.
Congrats Surlydude, you are a worthy successor to the crown - I tied the goat to the bollards last night, glad it was still there this morning.
I thought last night there was no way in the world it was going to be fine enough in the morning to ride - apart from the low temps, it appeared to be quite alright. I was Belgian enough on Sunday in the Adelaide Ardennes, so in my mind I had an excuse??
Comment by Dahondude on April 24, 2012 at 11:39 I wondered where you got to Richard! Sorry :-) So much for team support.
A somewhat subdued Mountain Goat Challenge this morning. Richard rode route marshall - but really deserves a medal for continually showing up despite his ongoing leg/back problems, only to ride alone for most of it. Hopefully one day in the not too distant future he can once again unleash the Dark Horse! Snappy and Zzimmzzamm also present but riding tempo-ish on the climb, so really only me pushing the time-trial wheelbarrow with a somewhat disappointing time of 28 and a bit minutes lights to bollards (left the Garmin at home to relying on a wrist watch for timings). But I did finally grab the Goat for the first time. Despite the weather forecast the morning was clear, cool, windless and the roads dry in places. Mt Lofty was a nice place to be for a few minutes until sweat started to freeze and core temperatures headed downhill.
The descent was chilly and I spent a good hour at home shivering, despite wearing lots of layers.
Comment by Richard Smith on April 24, 2012 at 9:37 After putting in a PW (Personal Worst) on the way up, with only the thought of the descent to keep me going ..
Flatted front tyre just as you cross to the downhill side of the Highway on the way down, and proceeded to discover that both of the tubes that have been in my seatbag for a year or so had holes already installed (suspect from abrasion inside the bag).
Due to the time window - decided to call in the support vehicle - so ended up not even doing the decent - Dang!
One of the great things about cycling - had probably 6 offers of help & tube whilst waiting for car, - even guys who were quite obviously pushing it - slowed enough to offer! (but wheels were already in motion).
Comment by Dahondude on April 23, 2012 at 15:33 Yippee, so cold, wet, windy and 'ard. Mur de Bollards handicap :-)
