I've been mapping out a few routes that I've either done solo or would like to do but am not sure about putting them up as Muddy rides so I am looking for suggestions.
50km (approx rides) are fairly easy through Clarendon, Blewiitt Springs and slightly longer 80km rides can be done using Willunga, Penneys Hill and Wickhams Hill. The first dilemma I face a tad selfish in that I'd rather do the longer rides on a weekend when I am not racing the next day (which are few and far between as races are most weekends). The second dilemma is some of the routes are on roads that I'm happy to ride on (albeit cautiously) Main Rd Coro Valley, Cherry Gdns Rd, Ironbank Rd, Upper Sturt Rd for example but I know some riders are wary of those roads. While I'm happy to ride on them I'm not so sure I would want to organise a ride for others on those roads. I've also kept away from Education and Oakridge due to the steep inclines but these could be included. So I need some route suggestions please..
Next weeks ride will probably be Chandlers Hill, Clarendon, Blewiitt Springs, McLaren Vale, C2V approx 60 kms.

Includes the beautiful Cherry Gardens Rd into Ironbank Rd and a small climb up Sturt Valley Rd followed by the descent of Aldgate Valley Rd - each of these amongst the most beautiful roads around Adelaide in my opinion. I ride them reasonably often and don't have any traffic concerns with them.
The road between Mylor and, probably, McLaren Flat is not challenging and has a reasonable verge so again, I don't have traffic issues on this route. Overall there are only a few "hills" worth mentioning. Also, at the start you could head straight to Chandlers Hill Rd instead of Bains Rd and would probably knock off around 5km in total distance as well.
Obviously a longer ride means a pitstop somewhere. Meadows Bakery has potential Muddies haunt written all over it in my opinion!
What do people think? Something to try for something different??? A longer route???

Permalink Reply by RD6 on April 27, 2012 at 19:43 95km, add extra 5 km as warm down - nice route for the spring classics
Permalink Reply by Michelle Crick on April 28, 2012 at 13:56 I have always wanted to go across to Meadows one way or another just not made it yet :-)
Permalink Reply by Patrick O'Kane on April 28, 2012 at 16:11 It's a great route Michelle, used to be a regular on the longer muddies runs a few years ago.
Permalink Reply by Matt "Boz" on April 29, 2012 at 19:47 I like it :-)
Permalink Reply by Adam Williss on October 2, 2012 at 14:22 I've been "tinkering" with potential Muddies routes just for shits and giggles and came up with this one...
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1776171
Just over 40km long and over 1000m vertical all very close to Riminis. There are 12 climbs - all reasonably short (all but 2 climbs are 1km or less). Sort of like a mini dirty dozen. Hills are definitely very steep and punchy though - all of them hit more than 10% at some point. Obviously lots of pain and lots of regrouping!
Would this be considered too difficult to be a Muddies ride? If so (with no offence taken - it is challenging and couldn't be considered a casual spin), I might organise something for an alternate Muddies weekend and invite all and sundry. If no takers, I'll do it solo and report back if I am still alive.
If there is interest in it being a Muddies route, it would need to be run when there is no racing the following day! I'll leave that to Pat for programming!
Permalink Reply by Trent on October 2, 2012 at 14:35 Seriously something wrong with you! =-) i think it looks like a good route! would be happy to join you either as a muddies route or an alternate.
Permalink Reply by Adam Williss on October 2, 2012 at 14:41 I just always seem to need a challenge to keep motivated to ride my bike. The flat stuff bores me very quickly, so climbing hills just seemed to be the thing to keep me going. For a heavy bugger like me, climbing is always challenging!
I'm in - kudos for suggesting something different and challenging..........

Was thinking something like this the other Day, not as brutal and not as many climbs - Oakridge Road, Windebanks Road, Education Road, Potters Road, and a brutal one in Cherry gardens that I forget the name .....
