Only being new to strava I was amazed at how fast it drains the battery. Are there any settings I can change to extend the battery life so I can record some longer rides I have planned.

I'm not sure about the iphone, but with android phones you can turn off the bluetooth and wifi, they seemed to make about a 30min difference for me.

I have the same issue, I turn my cellular data off which is notifications such as Facebook, E-mail etc.

The other thing I did was go on Ebay and purchased a external portable battery for the iphone. The iphone has a battery of 2250Mah these external batteries are 1900Mah so they wont over charge your iphone. I've had it for a couple of months now and no dramas and now can push out over 200km's while using it.

What brand have you got?

Agree with the iPhone battery issue when using the Strava app. I only get about a 70km ride out of a full charge. Have also tried turning off Bluetooth, which helps a bit I think. Will have to look into the external battery idea. My stats aren't great as yet, but still worth recording I reckon! Guess if I rode faster it would be less of a problem...

I've only just purchased an external battery for my iPhone. It's a 2200mAh i-Power branded battery case. Had it running for over 5 hours during the Velo Adelaide with the GPS on and still had 100% of the phones charge left upon finishing. It's a little bulky - almost doubles the thickness of the phone and adds around 75 grams to its weight. I bought it on e-bay for $15 shipped from seller cca-accessories in Canberra. Delivered in 4 days.

I get about 5 hours out of my iPhone4GS running Strava.  I have bluetooth and WiFi turned off.  I tried turning off cellular data but found that Strava wouldn't get  a GPS lock without it.  (I think this is because the iPhone uses "assisted GPS", i.e. rather than have to wait up to 15 minutes for sufficient satellites, it augments the available satellite data with information gleaned from local cell towers.)

The external battery pack is a good idea.

I have a galaxy s2 that does the job. turn off all other processes (wifi, blue tooth, brightness and ony other apps), leave it re-charging over night and it lasts the distance.

I then upload it through wifi at home.

Do a search for Abvio Cyclemeter (I am on the ipad and dont have the link here), I used to use it prior to getting a Garmin.
It does more than the Strava app, doesn't draw as much from your battery and you can upload to any mapping site including Strava.

I get about 4 and a bit hours from my iphone 4S, with Wifi and bluetooth disabled. You need the celular on or Strava won't work without contact with base stations for its accuracy.
