I haven't ridden Stuey's bike path yet. I'd like to check it out, but I fear that the terrain and scenery would be too sleep inducing to ride it both up and back. So instead perhaps head through the hills to Williamstown, across to Gawler, then pick up the SOB for the return journey.

But what happens when it spits you out on Port Wakefield Rd, potentially the most bike unfriendly road in SA?  There must be a better/ safer way from there back to the city?

Or not?

Or reverse the direction and ride SOB first?

The Gawler Wheelers must have some ideas- Suggestions please.

What does S.O.B. stand for?

ya. I thought it should be the SOG, but I notice the Gawler team call it the Stuart Ogrady Bikeway

(alongside the new Northern expressway)

I guess I want to know if Main North Rd, or perhaps Salisbury Highway, are safer riding routes. Or if there's some secret back-streets way known only to the fellowship of Northern commuters.

Stuart O'Grady Bikeway
Sorry - don't get out that way much....

Snappy, firstly the SOB is basically a flat ride but unsheltered so you are likely to strike a head wind if you're heading south. The southern exit isn't too bad as the path ends alongside the Pt Wakefield Rd you will find a short track to a road immeadiately to your left. This is Norma Rd, Take a look at a street directory or Google maps and you will see that you can ride through to Salisbury Highway or Main Nth Rd whichever is your pleasure.

Exiting the SOB at the Nth end is also relatively easy, There is a track to a suburban Gawler Back street and head in the general direction of Gawler. Getting on to the SOB from the Nth is difficult if you don't know your way around Gawler as there are no signs. Hopefully  one of The Gawler Guys will tell you the name of the street that will take you to the bikeway.

Clive- thanks for the tip re Norma Rd.

Hmmm. I have never associated the word pleasure with either of those highways, but I'll await further advice on which provides the most Giggle for Grunt.

If I'm clever I may be able to catch up with the Gawler Wheelers somewhere on their weekend ride and they could guide me through Gawler. It's uncharted territory for me.

And what I hear you saying is, check the BOM before riding the SOB?

Smudge lives in the area and could advise on the pro's and cons of Main Nth v Salisbury Hgwy.

Assuming the Gawler Cyclists are still riding down the SOB when you want to do the ride you could arrange to meet them at the intersection of Norma and the SOB, they ride from that point through a couple of suburbs and rejoin the SOB a little north.

They probably get to the Norma/SOB intersection about 8ish.

OK. Sounds like looping up the SOB and back through the hills is the way to go. No date in mind, just ideas
