Heart Rate Recording Issues

Started by Rob Wood. Last reply by Rob Wood Nov 13, 2012. 8 Replies

Hi all,I finally joined the Garmin club, been playing with my brand new edge my last couple of rides. Everything is working great except for the heart rate monitor which is giving largely inaccurate readings.Initially I was just getting the occasional spike which I suspect is not an unusually anomaly, ie 200+ for short periods of time. I can deal with these as they are generally pretty short. (Im referring to reading anomaly, not heart anomaly)My last ride I was getting readings consistently in…Continue

Broken Garmin

Started by James Jordan. Last reply by Laurens Bloem Aug 7, 2012. 10 Replies

Just wondering if anyone has come up with this problem. My Edge 800 will no longer connect to my computer. It keeps coming up with 'this accessory is not recognised'I have replaced the drivers and have tested the connection with my old Edge 705 which works fine.  I have even tried 9 different cables.I am really thinking I am going to have to send it off to get it repaired (or swapped which is their normal method)Continue

Incorrect speed readings

Started by Adam Brown. Last reply by Tim B Jun 8, 2012. 3 Replies

Hi Folks,I've just been mucking around with my Edge 500 after getting it back from repairs following a "borked" attempt to upgrade to Version 3.0 Firmware.I've just noticed that when turning the unit on initially, the speed reading fluctuates from 0km/hr to as much as 2km/hr. Have others noticed this phenomenon? Is it related to GPS tracking? I haven't noticed this before, as usually I don't turn my unit on until I have connected it to the bike, at which time it tends to detect the speed/cadence…Continue

Backing up an Edge 500

Started by Tim B May 23, 2012. 0 Replies

Not sure how many of you know how to do this, but at times it may be useful to backup your Edge 500 to keep your data safe (not ride data but personal data, device settings etc) in case you may need to reset or replace your Edge 500, you can get the new one back to being like your old one easily. This is copied directly from Garmin Support....How can I back up my personal settings and profiles on my Edge 500?Certain circumstances may arise where you will want to save your settings, profiles, and…Continue

Nope, hadn't seen it, and dont think I'll be upgrading anytime soon, two pretty insignificant changes by the looks.

There is a new firmware update for Garmin 500 (3.2). Has anyone updated yet? It looks like just a small update of a couple of minor things.

It must be remembered that this is for the garmin 500 only, refer to this link for other models

Thanks Baron. It's worth a go but also worth a second reference for the same action. I think the data is called an almanac and was common on older gps units.

It's worth giving it a go.
Thanks for this

Hmmm interesting I find the problem has only showed up since I updated the software!! Everytime I turn it on it has gone to manual wheel size for some reason... And when I try to change it to GPS it keeps trying to select wheel size... Very very strange.. For me baffled that's for sure

My garmin lost the plot on the way home today - 1st time since new (May 2011). Reading up the Garmin FAQ, I came across this... might be useful to try if yours has been messing around.

Why is my Edge 500 not acquiring a satellite signal?

Occasionally, satellite data can become obsolete or corrupt preventing the Edge 500 from acquiring a satellite lock. Performing an AutoLocate on the device removes all of the current satellite data and allows it to re-establish a proper connection with satellites.

An AutoLocate may also be necessary in the following circumstances:

  • Device has not been used in over two weeks
  • Device is powered on in a location that is 150 or more miles from where it is normally used
  • Distance or speed data appears to be inaccurate as a result of a corrupt satellite signal

To perform an AutoLocate:

  1. Ensure the device is powered off
  2. Press and hold Lap and Start
  3. Press Power
  4. Release Lap and Start when the Garmin screen appears
  5. Leave the device outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of twenty minutes

Edge 500 will now have current satellite data, providing a good satellite lock. This will decrease the chance of inaccuracies in distance or speed.

according to garmin rep at TDU when garmin detects no cadence or speed from back wheel sensor it can automatically  switch to GPS settings which will give a false very low speed, soon as it detects movement from sensors it switches back

Rep said try this:   turn unit on and if you line up the sensors with magnets the speed reading will be a constant zero. ( It does for me)

Comment by Tim B on February 19, 2013 at 18:10
Make sure your magnet is close enough the sensor as well
