Garmin 520 Live Segments

Started by Dave. Last reply by Troy Collett Nov 16. 3 Replies

Ive recently purchased a 520 and have been unable to get the live segments working.Ive managed to get my strava account linked to the garmin connect account, and they are visible on the garmin connect site. However, despite numerous syncs and a software update that required connection of the 520 to the computer, the segments just dont appear on the 520 itself.I have no trouble with the uploading of rides to garmin connect (and its direct link to strava)Has anyone else had issues like this and…Continue

Garmin announce new 520 model - so over the top it's insane.

Also a new radar and bike light system.

i just started using the active segments feature on the week end on my 510.

it killed my HRM and Cadence... but moving on... i have tried loading the BETA 3.4.3 firmware and will test this week to see if it fixes notes said...fixes some data fields not showing..

Loading the segments can be a painful process as they have to exist on garmin connect...FA segments on connect compared to strava..

Loading of segments routinely some of them took a few loads to take..

segments actually works pretty well.... and i did get some PR's on strava by knocking a few mins of some of my routes..

1/ it announces when you are approaching a segment and gives you count down distance to start point

2/ whilst in that segment it kills off your normal screen and gives you a route map view.. with data fields of elapsed time, time behind ( red colour ) or time ahead  ( blue colour) and also distance to complete the segment.

i actually really really like it.. it could be a bit cleaner view ,,but it is functional... and wit hthe fields it has .. i really did push 110% effort to win my PR..

you can also go into the folder settings icon previous to starting a ride and enable/disable all or specific segments... if you don't want to use them.

I am a convert for sure to garmin connect "segments".

DC Rainmaker says: Garmin announces automatic sync with Strava, MapMyFitness and Endomondo! Yup, as of now you can automatically sync your rides and runs straight from Garmin Connect to Strava, no cables required! Here's the skinny:

Pity this doesn't sync with the Strava group. I'll cross post there.

I tend to upload from my Edge 810 via iPad or phone to Garmin Connect at the end of a ride, then will copy it over to Strava while I have a shower.

Garmin Connect's long expected makeover is now live (if you choose 'go modern). They'd be saying it was coming and I guess they've got it out before the northern summer. There was a story that they have been in discussions with Strava to combine their tool but it fell over and they went alone. It's hard to see it as a Strava killer. Probably more aimed at the amateur with a training plan.

Also in Garmin news they announced a new unit, the Garmin 1000 this week.

Bike Radar reports 'It will carry over many of the training features of the Edge 810 and the navigation features of the Edge Touring, as well as adding a few new options in a higher-resolution display.' ... more

There is new video featuring Garmin riders that shows off the live segment chasing capabilities of the 1000. These segments are not Strava segment, but Garmin Connect user segments (a whole lot of new KOMs up for grabs). These features are sort of part of the Strava iPhone app but the disconnect between the phone and a head unit probably didn't make it a worthwhile tool but with integration into a Garmin unit this could be a real competition for Strava.

Personally I like Garmin Connect and upload all my rides to it. Strava I don't maintain such a log.

The Edge 1000 features a 3in touchscreen display with full-colour 240x400 resolution, compared to the Edge 810's 2.7in display with 160x240 resolution. Claimed battery life is up to 15 hours.

The Edge 1000 will be available in the UK from May 2014 for £439 alone or £499 as a bundle.

Thanks Brett .... Yes I have seen that pdf ... It's big on what the 810 can do, but not all that revealing about how  ... I've had "lock on road" off since day one

@ greg,

page 10 may help, try turning "lock on road" off

Hi all ... Just purchased a Garmin 810 with Aus/NZ top maps. I have been able to work out how to record, navigate, upload rides etc. whilst using it in mainly default settings when road riding. However, recently I tried to record a ride which involved a mixture of roads, trails and unmarked bush-bashing tracks. When riding the tracks the Garmin was displaying messages I had not seen before ... For example "ready to navigate", even though I assumed it was operating in record mode (I had pressed the "RIDE" icon). - So can the 810 be used to record off-road rides? - And if so how?
