Having used Strava before i got my Garmin i havent got into using Gamin Connect yet. wondering what people prefer, differences etc?
i find strava ok but i dont want the "segment" competition thing taking over my enjoyment of riding but i do like the "data" it gives...
interested in other's thoughts.......

The data looks really useful without the segments that strava shows....which might be a good thing!

you are right....it can consume you!
The thing I like about strava is you can see others rides, even those you arent following.
I dont think Connect did that last time I looked?
It gives ideas for good circuits. Ive been eyeing off some of Barons loops ....but havent been game to try them yet.
Permalink Reply by Trent on February 8, 2012 at 15:28 Connect allows u to create courses without having ridden them which looks good. im just a bit over the segment thing on strava thats all.

Permalink Reply by Patrick O'Kane on February 8, 2012 at 16:20 I haven't logged a ride to Garmin Connect in ages since discovering Strava. I see no point in it. Stava does it all, and more, so I see no point in duplicating the same ride to Garmin Connect.
I agree about being over the Strava segment thing though Trent. It is starting to become a bit tiresome uploading a ride and finding 200 segments on a 50km ride, I know you can create a segment and make it private or hide it. I think you should be able to hide/ignore/delete all of the useless segments from the dashboard.
I suspect it won't be long before we all start unfollowing other riders because I'm sick of seeing who rode 3km and climbed 4m on their commute to work every day, or Patrick got a PR on Patricks street segment today, totally meaningless info to anyone else.
I posted a comment very much in the same line a couple months ago and deleted it because no comment was made, i figured i was the only one. There is far too many strava segments that are created over the same coures. One thing with Strava is if you hide a segment you feel is useless it wont be shown on any future rides over the same course. I dont use garmin connect but Garmin training centre, i know its basic but a good back up incase the sites lose data. A improvement on the strava site would be option tab where you can only see activities for a certain distance or elevation climbed therefore not seeing everyones rides to shops etc. I think a real need for strava is to link rides with weather stations , some how, it might sound impressive getting a top 10 position on a segment but if its aided by the wind on a certain day then its not as great as if there was no wind, or against it.(IMO). I'm glad someone has taken the iniative to bring back a strava leader board for ac even if its on another site, great incentive to push hard out on bike.
One thing i still see alot of people doing is not hiding the first part of your ride, i can see exactly where some people live when i zoom in, if i was a criminal i would be having a feast

I use Garmin Connect to look at the bigger numbers and averages - (then export these numbers into Excel for further analysis)
I use Strava more to compare my times on Segments to understand where my improvements are and identify areas that need work - ie is it long hills\short hills and is it due to cadence\heart rate etc..
And - the big one - Strava makes it easier to compare where I am with people I follow, people from here, and people in my weight division etc..
Finally - Strava is easier to follow people and find new routes to tackle

You can upload rides to Strava and mark them as private so they are not for available for public view.
