I've been riding across Whitmore Square on Sturt St for a while now and every time I go across it I wonder whether the design of the bike/pedestrian crossing is weird or whether I'm just not getting what the designers intended.
Is it just me?
Are the weird narrow entry lanes with their 90 degree corners and sharp edges a hazard or deterrent to cyclists?
Are the hand rails on the wrong side for a cyclist waiting to cross the road?
Is it even supposed to be used by cyclists?

I agree, would seem to be more of a pedestrian setup, just another connectivity issue. In the CBD there are lots of little spots waiting for the final touch, try the western end of Franklin St.

i am not saying that the design is what cyclists wanted, or that the design is for the benefit of cyclists. however, ac members were seeking some changes in morphett street for cyclist safety.

I'm thinking that was you on the way home last night, we chatted going up the track alongside Anzac and West Terrace then I thought I'd left you after nipping across at the lights and riding towards the hills. Then after a quick spurt up Norton's I was surprised to see you again doing the same thing...were you stalking me?!
On Whitmore Sq/ Sturt St. This whole area has been a mess from start to finish, first the abortive attempt at a Copenhagen bike lane which was worse than no bike lane frankly then these ridiculous islands. I don't know what they are supposed to be in fact they seem to more closely resemble drains for rainwater run off than actual ways for traffic whether on foot or cycle. Maybe they were trying to prevent motorcyclists?! Still I've perfected the technique now and hardly ever fall off when negotiating them :-/
Good effort on the LHT, see you out there again some time...

My tactic with the drains (a good description) is to avoid them completely if possible by just riding around them.
It is good to see a lot of green paint has appeared in the last week in the bike lanes around Whitmore Square.
