The aim of the the Adelaide Community Bicycle Workshop (co-op), which is supported by the Bicycle Institute of SA, is to operate as a community bicycle workshop co-operative dedicated to the repairing, and recycling, of bicycles. Read more...

Where: Plympton Community Centre, 34 Long Street, Plympton.

Currently it is open every Saturday morning from 9am - 12pm. We are looking for more volunteers who want to get involved and open it at other times.

Getting things started.

Hi,the Workshop is now  set up, with tools, spares,  4 bikes for people to work on, and tea/coffee making facilities. On Saturday a dozen people showed up  -  we changed a sprocket wheel, fixed broken spokes, shortened a chain, and did most of that with parts salvaged from other bikes. Address is 34 Long Street, Plympton -  at the community centre, kind of opposite Plympton Primary School. Workshop open this weekend

OK.. we are nearly there. Jeremy Miller has been following up a few loose ends like getting a first aid kit and some other little OH&S requirements from the council. We have also been investigating getting a small shipping container on the site so we can store some extra bikes and parts. If you know of one going let us know because it seems the small ones are hard to come by. Absolutely loving the atmosphere at the bike workshop. Some people fixing up their own bikes, getting advice from the experience people about how to do it. Some people restoring old rusted steel frame bikes to look super cool. Some people fixing up donated bikes ready for use by refugees. Even was free food yesterday. I'm hoping to be there most weeks fixing up bikes here at my share house.

Hi Mike,

I have two bikes I would like to donate if you want them, 1 1990's Marin MTB, for person about 5 ft 7 the frame has been damaged where my ex tried to remove the seat post which had fused to the frame, but it has almost brand new breaks and gears, and tyres, if you can't use the frame certainly all the running gear is in great order. Also a specialised touring bike approx c2005, suit rider about 5 ft 6 the frame is in great shape but the running gear is pretty worn, would be ok for city commuting but not for longer distances. It is not worth me replacing the groupset.

Please let me know if these interest you at all and I will bring them down.

I attended the Adelaide Community Bike Workshop for the first time today (14/4/12) and had a great time - checking and fixing a couple of bikes for the  Bikes for Refugees programme. It gives me a chance to use what I learned in the 3 day Bicycle Maintenance course.

People were very friendly and helpful - I'll be back ....

might drop by for a look soon, i know a group who are setting up a community centre in the NE and are looking for projects - they like the idea of this.  they could assemble an army of older guys to do basic stuff, but would be short on mechanical expertise.

I am planning on coming down on either the 17th or 24th Dec to learn how to fix one of my bikes.  I don't know what I am doing, or what to use...

Also would be interested in finding our more about getting involved with the workshop. (non-mechanical things for now at least)

Sat 24th 9-12 noon.

The shipping container is now on site and ready to be turned into a shed for working on bikes and storing parts, equipment and donated bikes waiting for restoration by Bikes for Refugees.
