Hi,the Workshop is now  set up, with tools, spares,  4 bikes for people to work on, and tea/coffee making facilities. On Saturday a dozen people showed up  -  we changed a sprocket wheel, fixed broken spokes, shortened a chain, and did most of that with parts salvaged from other bikes. Address is 34 Long Street, Plympton -  at the community centre, kind of opposite Plympton Primary School. Go round the back of the hall. We have a room at the back of the hall. Currently unmarked, so just come…Continue

OK.. we are nearly there. Jeremy Miller has been following up a few loose ends like getting a first aid kit and some other little OH&S requirements from the council. We have also been investigating getting a small shipping container on the site so we can store some extra bikes and parts. If you know of one going let us know because it seems the small ones are hard to come by. It might seem a strange thing to ask by we may as well! The workshop will be open this weekend from around 9.30 -…Continue

Dear members of the Adelaide Community Bicycle Workshop,

I'm new to adelaide, coming from Portland Oregon.  I not only want to come to your meetings and possibly try to help out with getting your Co-op up and running, (I have experience in portland with starting a bike collective), but I also need help from someone.

I've landed in Adelaide and on my first ride out, i've damaged my crank arm.  (honestly, i think it happened transporting the bike, but i just didn't catch it till i was on a longer ride) I had a RSC3-217XR andel crank arm, 110mm BCD rings, 36 & 48t, attached to a Shimano , BB-UN54 68 x 113mm.  I'm not sure where i should shop for something compatible. Also, once i get it, I can fix it if i can borrow the right tool.

Is there anyone out there who can help me?

I'd be happy to supply beer and good conversation in exchange for local knowhow on how best to fix my bike.

Thanks

-momoko

I also sent this to all members of this group - but posting it here for all concerned!

Hi All

The bike workshop has been a rather long gestation, I am hoping that the end result will be worthwhile - here is where we are at currently... (this is the short story version)...

After the initial site on Franklin Street fell through we investigated several alternatives with no luck.

We were then offered a space in Plympton (West Torrens Council) that we have been working on securing. This seems to be getting closer to reality. The space is in a community centre just off the West Side Bike Way - The Bicycle Institute intends to hold our AGM at this space in May, and I am hoping that we will be able to formally open the workshop (that I hope we will have had running for a few weeks by then) at this event.

We have also been back in negotiation with the Adelaide City Council (isn't regime change wonderful) - about securing a site in the city. At this stage this is VERY preliminary - but several of us will shortly be putting together a proposal to have access to an underutilized building.

So, it may mean that Adelaide could effectively have TWO bicycle workshops - I would see them as being quite distinct both in form and operation so as not to duplicate services.

Will keep you all posted - I am expecting the final news on the Plympton site next week.

Cheers
Jeremy

Would be great to catch up next week Ollie..

Hey Ollie here from Cycle-Re Cycle in Sydney http://bikeclub.wordpress.com/
Just wondering if anyone involved in the Coop might be keen to meet up and talk about the project? I'm coming down to Adelaide Next week to help some people running a conference at Flinders with a grant to build bikes and to run bike mechanics trainings. I have been helping run our bike coop in Sydney for 3 years and helped it grow from a backyard operation with 5 people a night, to the 80-100 people we often have now. I would be really keen to meet up and talk about how to strengthen and grow bike Coops in Australia.

Any news yet, about when the workshop will be available? I have some old bikes ready to bring, would like to take them to the Workshop sooner rather than later.

Shame it is, but all ok! We will just have to be patient and work through the paperwork and any issues in a methodical way - after all, have to remember what Will said to me (and I paraphrase) "It is a sign that a city has come of age when it opens a community bicycle workshop..."
The want, need, commitment and opportunity are here, right now, it is up to all of us to make it a reality!

Hi All. Here is an update.

The development application is with the council and they are working through all the issues that may arise from approving this. They are also the landlords. This is taking a bit longer than we first expected which is unfortunate but understandable being the first venue Renew have submitted.

Needless to say the opening date we had penciled in as May 29 will no longer work. We'll keep you posted when we hear more.
