Have any of you touring legends done the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in Canada/USA? A mate and I are looking at it and wondering what the ideal bike would be for credit card touring it in stages. From the pictures at Tour Divide there seems to be a lot of dirt road so I'm wondering if the Long Haul Trucker with fat semi-slicks would do job. It is only 4418km through the Rockies. How hard can it be?

One of the nicest blokes I know and amazingly fit for someone of his age. I hope I have some tours in my legs when I get to his age.

Minamilist I am not. I would like to be but I never seem to be able to manage it. I also have a freind that did the big lap in sections. Rode six weeks every year starting where he finished the last time. Took him about six years to complete the circuit this way.

I can understand that Jim I want to do the big lap one day but have the time to really enjoy it. My old dog is 16 yo and is a bit of a tie. My wife has just become a bit keen on riding. I would love do do a beginner tour with her to see if she can get the touring bug. I was thinking something like Quorn to Adelaide with short distances stopping at all the little towns along the way to break her in gently.
I have a couple of mates about to leave to do Adelaide to Darwin. I would love to be doing that also but I have zero holidays left at the moment.Bugger:-))

As a activity that is addictive I have found nothing that compares to self supported bicycle touring. Thanks to a friend that introduced me to touring I have completed several really good tours now. Mawson trail bottom 2/3 unsupported , top 1/3 supported. Twice from Gawler Ranges to Port Lincoln. Port Lincoln to Adelaide. Ceduna to Lincoln by road. Streaky to Elliston by coastal route. Broken Hill to Menindie along the Darling and Murray Rivers to Goolwa then Adelaide. Great Ocean Road then Victorian High Country. I am addicted to reading journals on crazyguyonabike and would love to do some expedition touring like some of the contributors on that site. I have added a photo album to my page with some photos of some of my recent tours if you are interested. I love the way that when bicycle touring no one is threatened by you and every one is willing to engage in conversation and interact with you. It gives you a real sense of the communities that you are travelling through.
