The aim of this group is to build upon previously published information on cycling blackspots, to try and get as many Adelaide cyclists as possible to have an input on what the worst blackspots for them is and suggest how to fix it.

The plan is that if you know of a cycling blackspot, if you can start a discussion forum for that spot if one does not already exist, stating where the problem is, any particular details of the hazard and possible solutions. If someone has already started a discussion for a blackspot you are aware of, add a comment, so that there is an indication on the numbers affected that particular hazard.

I suspect that when the government tries to work out priorities for cycling infrastructure, it uses statistics such as injury figures and numbers of cyclists for a particular stretch of road. What this fails to capture is where a route is not used because of some hazardous choke point. Hopefully with the input from enough real cyclists we can get some o the worst problems fixed.

At the corner of Wellington Square and Jeffcott Street in North Adelaide was a smooth SA Water cover-lid. It was also to the left of the road where a cyclist rides, or is forced to ride by vehicles, even when trying to avoid hazards. Later bicycle lanes were marked and half of it was now in a bicycle lane. It took TWELVE YEARS to have the smooth cover-lid replaced. During that time I wrote many letters, including to the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Water Security. Writing to the two ministers was not a catalyst for action.

Since then I have written to the ministers about hundreds of cycling hazards due to SA Water infrastructure. Smooth cover-lids, non-flush cover-lids outside limits of Austroads, and blue cat eyes / RRPMs installed outside Technical Standard 135 and also happen to be cycling hazards. Still waiting.

I am appalled by a particular cycling hazard that I noticed in December 2009. I wrote to the Minister for Water Security and SA Water but not remedied, despite me stressing the hazard. When you are next in Prospect, check out Regency Road on the southern side, just east of the intersection with Prospect Road. If you want to take a photo, wear visible clothing and take a friend to guard you from the the traffic. There is a huge hole around a cover-lid that. The hole is 45mm deep, and the cover-lid itself is more than the Austroad limit of 20mm. The hole is where a cyclist may move from the left lane to the right, to make a right hand turn. It is also on a downhill. I ride a sturdy MTB with town-and-country tyres for utility shopping, but not sturdy enough to cope with that huge deep hole. Some authorities place cat eyes in bicycle lanes without realising that it is a hazard for light weight road bikes with skinny tyres. But even the densest person must realise that a huge deep hole in the road is a cycling hazard.

As you come down Blacks rd, Gilles Plains in the morning it looks like an unobstructed run down the bike line, but look closely and hidden n the shadows in a man hole sticking up in the middle of the lane.

Good bike lanes before and after, but a 250-odd metre stretch of running the gauntlet, often with heavy vehicles bearing down on you. The northbound route has the added disadvantage of a horrendous surface.

Comment by heather on December 11, 2009 at 13:59: The Shuldholz - North East Roads intersection has long been in the top 5 for vehicle collisions, that includes Grand Junction Road at Gepps Cross and the Britainia Roundabout. The video definitely shows the traffic volume at the intersection, which is scary in its own right.
