Stuart - Bikes for Refugees is still going. We are happy to help  with spares. Open Saturdays  2-5 pm; otherwise,  text  0435 02 16 81 to fix a time.  Currently,  40 bikes, lots of spare pedals, you are welcome to look through.

Thanks all.  David, if you're still out there, I've sent a friend request in case  you're still able to drop by tonight.  I've been busy with other stuf & haven't put the freehub back on and the wheel back in.  You're welcome to drop in for a beer and witness or help with what should be a simple procedure.  I had some trouble getting the correct (sealed) bearings and the LBS ended up tapping the old out and the new back in.  I have the tools.

Following Richard's comment "you'll be amazed how often you'll wind up fiddling with bearings.."  --  true.     

   At "Bikes for Refugees", around half the bikes donated, need bearings adjusting. Mostly it's loose cones on a wheel. Also,  quite a few  1-piece cranks, the cone and lock-nut need adjusting.

Rebuilding bearings is as satisfying as truing wheels, it's one of those things that's done by feel and which defines  you as a mechanic. Go for it mate. Feel the force and learn the feel - besides, you'll be amazed how often you'll wind up fiddling with bearings once you have the courage to give it a go.

I've got the cone spanners if you want to pop over and borrow them sometime. You also need to remove your cassette using a chain whip and cassette removal too.

David.  Thanks very much.  I've been trying to document my recent adventure on my Home Page.  At this point I've just got to put the wheel back together and put it on.  I've learnt a lot and spent a bit.  I just hope the whaling stops.

I was going to ask if anyone was willing and able to come over and help me / show me how to lube / change my rear wheel bearings.  But, having seen the BicycleTuror site, I might be able to do it myself!  (http://bicycletutor.com/overhaul-wheel-bearings/   etc).  Still, if anyone's really keen to show off their skills or just make sure I don't screw it up, you'd be welcome.  We have beer and an espresso machine.  You may have heard my bike whaling eerily on decent during RL Crazy or MCCT due to the problem.

We can consider ourselves lucky Peter that he did not break out the jewel in the crown, we would have need welding masks for that chromed object of sheer cycling beauty!

Jeez Jim, a bit of warning before posting a pic like that would be helpful. Gives a bloke a chance to drop brightness on his computer monitor so as not to be blinded by the reflection of your running gear :-)
Note to self, extra chain cleaning before Sunday...
