Sounds fantastic! That would be terrific to get a contingent from the Riverland to come down for it. Good luck training for this ride up there!!! Refer to the Event Page for the climbs - yes 13, a 'bakers dozen'.
Yep - we will be regrouping after most (if not every) climb like the Victorian version. A couple of reasons for this. Mainly because this is a social "challenge" not a race, with the goal to complete the event, not see who is the fastest (strava attempts are fine though!).
Secondly, most of these climbs are very steep and many are up and back on the same road. I don't think anyone wants to see a pile of cyclists flying down the hill towards them while they are swerving all over the road trying to make it up there! So safety is an important consideration.
Comment by Adam Williss on June 11, 2012 at 20:47 Thanks for offering to help Brett. I'll be in touch.
I don't think we will need more than one or two vehicles assisting. If anyone has to bail, they can roll back down the hills! If there is a mechanical or a crash (touching wood) then there will be a first aid kit on hand and also then the chance to pick up the bike. Also, we can carry some spare water, and if it is a cold morning that warms up, perhaps we could unload some extra clothing into the car/s to collect later.
Cheers for the offer. Appreciated!
Not up for the challenge, asmatic attack just views the gradients on the pc, but am happy to help out where possible, have a ute with a bike rack i have built to carry 2 carbon bikes safely if necessary, also have flashing roof mount safety light, sing out if i can be of any assistance otherwise i will see you on the day. cheers Brett (wimp)
Comment by Pele Ton on June 10, 2012 at 21:27 Keen as for this ride. Is it 12 or 13 climbs ? Pretty sure the original in the US was 13 climbs. One of the great features of the recent Dirty Dozen in Victoria was that they waited for EVERYONE on the top of the hills. Going to push very hard to bring a good group from the Riverland. All looks great so far.
Comment by Adam Williss on June 10, 2012 at 20:57 Out of interest for everyone, a recent member of this site - Zimm Zamm - will be known to a few of you. He completed the 3 Peaks ride this year and I think it would be fair to say that he is a mountain goat (Corkscrew repeats before work during the week for instance).
Today he rode the entire route out of interest. This is his tweet about it this afternoon:
"Rode entir #adeldirtydoz route 2day; ABS.BRUTAL!!! 96.43km w/ 3026 elvn gain, exctly 5hr ride time & 3174C burnd"
also:
"by time got 2 Woodlnd Way aftr Coachhouse (at about the 90km mark) I was spent - had to stop w/ 100m 2 crest for a min or 2."
