POINT OF CLARIFICATION
HILL CLIMBING ROUTES
TEC SUPPORT & SEPARATE GROUPS
(Part 1 of 2)

Gawler Wheelers BEGINNER HILL ride events always provide Tail End Charlie (TEC) support and ride as ONE complete group. A 'Sign On Sheet' is not required to be completed by each rider.

Gawler Wheelers HILL ride events DO NOT provide Tail End Charlie (TEC) support, but lead riders are requested to wait at the top of each major hill to allow other riders to catch up if required.

A 'Sign On Sheet' is required to be completed by each participating rider before starting the HILL ride. The 'Sign On Sheet' allows the Ride Leader to contact riders who may have become lost or had a mechanical incident.

A HILL ride event may be split into two independent groups of riders. The first group will generally ride at a somewhat more aggressive pace when compared to that of the second group. The formation of a second group is largely dependent on the following factors :

• The number of riders actually participating on the day
  
  
• The willingness of someone to act as a Ride Leader for the second group
  
  
• The current weather conditions
  
  
• The severity of the route
  
  
• The 'general consensus' or 'feeling' on the day

If you believe that you are a potential candidate for the second HILL group, then you should include some preparation before turning up for the event, since you may in fact need to become the Ride Leader. If you can organise yourself and other potential candidates to form a second group before the event begins, then this will avoid wasting time on the morning of the ride.

If you volunteer to be the Ride Leader for the second group then your responsibilities include :

• A detailed knowledge of the HILL ride route
  
  
• Ensuring that the provided 'Sign On Sheet' for the second group is completed
  
  
• Carrying the 'Sign On Sheet' for the duration of the ride and contacting missing riders using your own mobile phone if required
  
  
• Keeping the second group's ride on schedule
  
  
• Making decisions regarding impromptu route detours and additional re-groups when required
  
  
• The authority to halt the HILL ride and plan a return to base if required
